Unemployed like many others...

Recommended Posts

I was laid off now 103 days ago. It feels like an eternity. I've got an excellent resume, great references, and even some decent connections especially in my industry.

I recently applied for and interviewed on a job that had 74 applicants (for ONE position). I got that interview based on knowing the hiring manager because he had been my client for three years and we knew each other quite well. However, I still have not heard back on that position yet. Other jobs I have applied for have had hundreds of applicants. I'm in the Seattle area where we currently have over 10% unemployment rate.

I have applied for over 170 jobs during this time, I've networked, gone to events, cold called, etc. I've had two call backs (both on medicore paying jobs less than my UE checks) and one solid interview in that time.

WHAT GIVES!?

I'm discouraged. We bought our house about nine months ago when everything was wonderful and financially right now, even with a roommate my boyfriend and I are not making the kind of money we need to be able to pay ANY of my debts. My credit which I had been working hard to rebuild is in the gutter. I'm thankful that we were smart when we bought our home and making our typical car/mortgage/insurance payments is not an issue. It's just getting old listening to my cell ring off the hook from the credit card companies.

Sob story like many others I am sure, but I'm growing quite discouraged. In addition, I don't even knwo what to do with myself during the day anymore. I'm unbelieveably bored. One side note is that going back to school isn't really needed as I graduated in August from college, which was a big accomplishment for me as I was working full time and going to night school.

Anybody want to comment and give me some uplifting words, advice or input on how to hold on to my slipping motivation to even get out of bed unless its a weekend with my man?

WHAT GIVES!?

What gives is that the economy is structured in a way that make asset prices high, profits high, wages low, and unemployment high. If they allow wages to grow what happens is the level of employment grows, obviously because people are spending and generating demand. So does inflation which lowers asset values i.e things rich people consume. Market power inflates prices of things poor people consumer more than inflation. The balance sheet of the large companies does not look as profitable either, that impacts the investment community. Basically this is all engineered to have a low wage high asset price economy. Because that is what the IMF wants. Inflation is the enemy because it impacts asset prices. Nothing to do with working people.

People voted for it because they were sold a lie that is what they got by not caring or standing up for each other as they divided and conquered. There will be a whole lot of very rich people buying up a lot of assets very cheaply. You watch, it will all likely boom again (unless they stuffed up) and there will be some insanely rich people. There will be even more jobs in the financial community and even less for real people. Either that or another period of protectionism or the US and western economies will remain in decline. In that case a lot of us will probably die or become the faceless poor.

Anyone who thinks lowering wages creates employment growth needs to go back and take a course in critical thinking.

Governments are more concerned about making sure companies can generate billions in profits than they are about looking after their own people. Why they do this I do not know. Maybe fear, maybe they've been sold a lie it is probably a combination of things.

The bottom line is that no one cares about you. You need to start looking for employment outside of your field and for the sake of employment only. I have no idea where you should be looking for a job. My first thought would be something government related but that would be too competitive and they're probably not hiring. Maybe you could look into the hospitality industry. Get your husband into a job that makes something, something blue collar.

how will you succeed in finding a job with a negative attitude?

I can see why you might say that. I've been as positive frankly as I can be, but I am here admitting outright that I am sad, depressed and discouraged. I cannot explain how hard it has been to sit back applying for jobs, being outgoing and friendly, networking and such only to get rejected numerous times regardless of anything else. So yes, I am not terribly positive about the prospect of getting a job right now which is why I am here asking for some advice on how to get a more positive outlook and stay motivated.

I know I am not the only person out there who feels this way...

But here's the thing, once you stop being positive and confident guess what your chances are of finding a job?

(Zero)

That's tough...I heard about the big layoff at Microsoft, Boeing and Philips (where I used to work). I'm very sorry to hear but like others have said keep fighting! I know the feeling, I was once laid off from Qwest in Seattle and didn't find a job for nearly 10 months

That's why I feel Unemployment should be 9 months because that way you will have more time to job search. Not saying so you can be home longer.
