This is a poem by Robert Bly entitled The Peacock's Tail. The poet wondered why his voice trails off whenever he recites his own poety, often it is difficult to speak when the thoughts come directly from the heart. It is shame that silences us. That is why we act differently around those we don't trust.

When I recite a line,

I allow my voice to fall off.

I speak strongly as I climb the line,

And then leave the last word to trail down

so that noone will hear it. Doubt enters

then, just when there should be something

fierce--when the throat should come

in lifting up what it knows,

what it feels, what it wants.

Why shouldn't the voice spread its peacock tail

in which the eyes of the universe are open?

This failing of breath is the shamed boy who

hides in his room at night...?
