I can't stop gaining weight!!!

Recommended Posts

Yes I do need too. I am just so upset that all of my efforts are not working. I used to overeat alot and to tell you the truth the only time I was skinny was when I was bulimic. I am just trying to find another way to get to a healthy weight and be happy. It isn't just 1 pound It is that I have been doing all this work and I gained 1 pound. Despite all my efforts and everything I have tried. And now I find myself taking laxatives and doing a water fast... I know I am out of control but i have no idea what to do when the only thing I care about is the end result.

yeah. this proves it, laxatives, fasting, exercise.. please seek some therapy. you are searching for control in your life that you havent otherwise found, so now you are turning to controling your diet as a way of coping with other stresses. it may appear to you that its just about your weight but in reality its not. And many people who have went on this path have died from it. I assure you where this road ends isnt a pretty place.

I don't think the poster weighs 50 pounds- I think she is stating that she believes she is 50 pounds overweight.

You need to get yourself some help. Talk to your doctor and see if you can be referred to a nutritionist who can help you learn to eat right- and I'd also suggest counseling for the eating disorder. Did you ever seek professional help for it before?

The what you need to do is get on a nutritious food plan and stick to it and not worry about the weight so much. Perhaps join something like Weight Watchers where they teach you have to eat healthily and how to lose and maintain weight.

And you need to cut out junk food and non-nutritious food if you want to maintain a healthy weight. Many bulemics binge on junk food and overeat, so perhaps you need to join weight watchers and learn how to eat all kinds of foods, but in healthy amounts.

Well the thing is, to stop weighing yourself is one step- but it does not address the core of the problem.

The ideal situation would be- if you could reach a healthy weight the RIGHT way, and be able to weigh yourself and keep track of your progress- but not be obsessed or do harmful things to yourself.

You need to approach the mind, body, and soul to tackle this issue.

Counseling for the mind. I would suggest Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. For your body, you need the expertise of the nutritionist and your doctor, and for your soul..... you need to stop being so hard on yourself.

Maybe i will go to a nutritionist. I dont know what more he or she can tell me about eating right though. And you are right I do have binges often, I stopped them these last few weeks though.

HUGE CONGRATS are in order! It is SO difficult to stop binging if you're bulimic. That's amazing! I know it takes so much effort. Good for you!

Amberche, I don't think the problem is the actual number on the scale (even if you are clinically overweight). It's how you feel about it, how you feel about yourself, how you treat yourself, where your anxieties lie, and so on. Eating disorders and disordered eating are NOT about food, they're about emotions.

I'm sorry that you don't feel good about yourself. When you feel good about yourself and you take good care of yourself, most of the time your body will reach a weight that is appropriate for YOU. No, it might not be model thin--one of the things you need to overcome is the image in your head of what you "should" look like.

I've observed this online forum for a while, and I can say that one area in which it's lacking is support for eating disorders and disordered eating. It's great for emotional support of all kinds, though! But I still feel strongly that you need to work with a professional to address these issues.

For a while, I was where you are sitting RIGHT NOW. I recovered and now I love my body. You can too. Never give up.

I think if you were really 50lbs overweight then you would find it far easier to lose weight - if someone that overweight followed this diet the lbs would be falling off (FAR too quickly, too).

Your diet and fasts might have lost you some weight, but that weight is not fat. When you eat so little thats muscle your burning to lose weight, not fat. A healthy steady weight loss is no more than 2lbs a week. If your near your ideal weight then this will be less.

It sounds like your mental health is in alot of danger here, regardless of your weight. Please see someone, what your going through is very difficult and extremely fragile.

I agree with yellow sweater. I am anorexic and have yet to find a good site to help people with EDs. I have observed this forum for awhile, but didn't actually join until recently. It has a lot of great advice from caring people, but ENA is still missing something for people with EDs.

Scales are bad. The only reason doctors use them is to monitor trends that might indicate a health problem.

As for calories... wow, I'm 5'1, 115 and I eat over 2000 calories a day. Good nutrition doesn't generally involve counting calories unless you don't practice portion control or tend to stress eat or something. You might want to talk to a nutrionist to help better balance your diet, especially if you are recovering from bulemia. Sometimes that extra bit of help is enough to get you going on a lifelong healthy lifestyle.

Under this section, we should have an ED/ Disordered Eating subsection... and also some posters/ mods who understand the ED mindset and behaviors.

My two cents.

Amber, how you doing today? What are you feeling now?

Definitely! How can we petition to get that forum? I'm sure there are many people with or who have had EDs that would be active in posting. EDs can go hand and hand with depression/suicide, but it really needs its own category because there is so much more to an ED that only those with 1st hand experience can relate to.

You could PM avman, who is in overall charge of things around here. It's not a bad idea; I'm sure such a forum would be welcome and get reasonable usage.

I think the lack of very high quality support for EDs here is, I believe, a reflection of the general state of knowledge out there. There is probably no area of medicine more rife with misinformation, and a lack of awareness of that misinformation, then eating habits and disorders. As a result, you get 5000 different exercise regimes, 10000 different diets, 15000 slimming products, and everyone thinks they know all about anorexia, bulimia etc, and how to handle it, when in fact very few people seem to have any definitive knowledge (and I certainly wouldn't claim to).

It's not ENA, it's the world at large, that wants to lose weight without a proper understanding of exercise and nutrition. It inevitably leads to serious problems for some people.
