Pneumonia

Hi everyone,

So I got pneumonia about a week ago and have been in bed for the past 4 days. Basically I was on a lot of medications that made me sleep all the time, I just got up to eat and went straight back to sleep. This was probably the sickest I have ever been in my entire life (I'm in my mid twenties).

Today was the first day that I actually got out of bed and had some coffee and made myself some some soup. Progress. I took a shower (for the first time in 3 days....gross I know!) I stepped on the scale and discovered that I gained 7 pounds in the last 4 days!!!!!!! When I'm healthy I'm a very active person and I am definitely a health eater. I have to admit while I was sick my friends brought me a lot of chocolate (my bad habit) and junk food and I didn't feel guilty eating it in the drugged up state of mind that I was in....but 7 pounds?!!??? I thought people lost weight when they are sick?!!!!

I'm sorry, some of you probably think I'm crazy and overreacting but this is a big deal to me. I like to work out and keep in shape, is it even possible to gain 7 pounds in 4 days? While I was sick my main concern was to just get better now that I am, I think I'm stressing myself out to no ends....shouldn't have stepped on that stupid scale Now I'm probably going to make myself sick again.....

Just venting.....(I'm still on meds so bear with me)

when i had pneumonia, i was told to drink lots of fluids.

maybe the lack of exercise and drinking fluids have made you retain water.

let the scale go until you regain your health, you sound like the type of person who will be able to work that weight off quickly.

i would take this as a sign you are starting to recover and feel better.

you are also probably getting irritable because you haven't felt well.... hang in there.

sorry you had to get sick but it happens....

Thanks for the reply,

You are indefinitely right. I am getting quite irritable. I usually work a lot and am a very outgoing person...always on the go. To go from that to being in bed for a week it's quite a change. But thankfully I am getting better, in fact, I'm going to get out of the house for the first time in a few days

I have been drinking a lot of liquids and eating a lot of junk so hopefully that weight will come right off in the next few days here

Thanks again...

glad to hear you are going out -- i bet you will feel much better if you do that.

just be sure to take it easy and don't go full speed right away.... ease back into things.

pneumonia is quite an illness. take time to take care of yourself.

i KNOW you will loose that weight soon!

I'm sure part of it is water retention, as the others have said. At least you caught on soon so you can back off on the chocolate & you'll be back to normal after your back on your feet a few days!

I do feel for you. Gaining 7 pounds in 4 days would really get to me, too!

The junk food probably had lots of sodium, which will have you retaining water. Increase your water to flush it out, avoid any more junk, sleep a lot, and you'll be surprised how quickly your weight will change.

Believe it or not, sleep burns more calories than people realize. Those who don't get enough sleep sabotage their own weight, no matter how much they work out. You've got the luxury of being able to rest, so indulge in that. I hope you feel better soon.

In your corner.

Thanks everyone!

You are making me feel much better I went out for a cup of coffee with a friend tonight and hit up one of our favorite clothing stores. I'm definitely taking it easy for now. But I can't even tell you how nice it was to get out of bed and get going again....

I'm laying off the chocolate and junk food for the time being. I will give myself another week before I hit the gym again so I'm trying to think positively. Hopefully at least some of the weight will come off within the next few days. Thanks for all of your support!!!!!
