Just had our kitten fixed

My bf and I just had our youngest boy neutered on Wednesday. He was spraying all over the house and the smell was atrocious! Does anyone know of something that would help the smell fade faster? When I had my last two boys fixed, they stopped spraying immediately. I hope this little man (Buddy) does, also.

From what I've seen, not all toms stop spraying once they're fixed but the vast majority does. How old is buddy? you may need to buy specific odour removers to get the smell out completely. Also, if buddy keeps spraying there are products out which contain pheromones to deter the cat from spraying. they work by giving the cat a feeling of well being, thus they don't feel the need to spray. Try to do as much as you can to de-stress your cat and he may lessen or stop the amount of spraying.

Thanks. We haven't caught him spraying since and he seems to have come through the procedure with flying colors! It's just that there is this lingering smell in the house that is unpleasant. We have tried the products that are supposed to remove the smell and they reduce the potency, for about an hour, and then it comes back. Buddy is eight months old and a real beauty! He's a tuxedo-marked, Ragdoll mix. Very large (he's 15 pounds at 8 months old), and very distinguished looking.

Most likely he's sprayed an area you haven't treated. Take everything out of the room that has the smell. If it's carpeted, rent yourself a rug doctor and get the pet odor control additive. Use the rug doctor on any upholstered furniture. Clean non carpet non upholstery with white vinegar and water.

The best thing I've found for cat urine odor is to have Chem Dry come in and treat the area with their "secret formula." It's not cheap, but they do come back after a period of time and retreat if the smell is not completely gone.

We have three cats and a dog, and if one of them gets sick or has an accident, the area is a magnet for all of them, and it can become horrible. Chem Dry has been in twice, and both times it completely eliminated the odor.

I've used all the products on the market, and they don't seems to really work. I've been told that "Odoban" is a good one, though. Maybe I don't use enough. The various home remedies--vinegar, seltzer, bleach, and others, didn't help a bit. I do think, though, that any steam cleaner makes it worse, and just spreads the urine out to a wider circle.

Good luck!!

Thanks everyone! I'll tell my bf to call Chem Dry if the smell doesn't go away. It seems to be getting better, but it's not completely gone yet. The good new is that Buddy isn't respraying, thank God! Yes, Ragdolls are sweet. The entire vet clinic fell in love with him! I gave him to my bf for his b'day in August. Our oldest cat was very ill (he died a couple of days after we got Buddy) and I knew my bf would be heartbroken, he had the cat for twenty years! Well, Buddy attached to him right away and anywhere in the house my bf or I happen to be, Buddy is close by. We had some really nice names picked out, but Buddy fit him perfectly.

Hey Jig!! I've done act rehab and rescue for years, so I've had my share of "markers" and "pee'ers"! lol I use Simple Solutions spray with Oxy Action. I get it at PetSmart or Petco. Nature's Miracle spray is pretty good too, but I've found that the Simple Solution works better. Now, the Simple Solution and such doesnt work as well if you have already treated the spots with other cleaners. I'm not sure why, but when used correctly on urine stains, it brings up the stain and the smell.

Also, we have a Hoover Carpet Steamer and they make a Pet Odor solution for it that works well to remove pet stains and odors. If you have a steamer you may want to try something like this.

We keep the simple solutions stuff on hand at all times. It works well on cat vomit and blood stains too.

You can also use the black light deal to find urine spots. I dont know a whole lot about that, but I've seen the lights and paraphenalia at Pet Smart to use to find the urine spots that you cant see or find otherwise.

Good luck!! And your Buddy sounds like an absolutely beautiful baby!!

All the male cats I have still sprayed occasionally after they got fixed, just not nearly as much. When my mom brought my brother home from the hospital for the first time, my cat took one look at him and sprayed the rocking chair. I catch random cats spraying my car sometimes, in parking lots and stuff, then I see my tom cat spraying my car when I get home
