redrose85
I was sent a credit card offer from my credit union, and decided that now is the time to try and get one. Over the phone I was told that I was approved (VERY happy, because my credit was pretty bad before). Then someone said to me that they had been told that they were approved, but then a couple weeks later, got a letter saying that they were not approved. Can you go by what you're told on the phone? Should I be expecting a credit card in the mail? Link to comment
Scorpion Fury
I'm pretty sure you have to sign an application to get a credit card, not just over the phone. When I was young, I got offers that I was "pre-approved" for, then got rejected when I applied. Link to comment
george237
Happened to my ex when we needed one for renovations. Don't count on it till it comes in the mail. Link to comment

chasey
I have one quick response for any credit card company that calls and tells me I've been preapproved: "How do you know you're talking to right person?" I've had too many people I know have someone else in their house accept the preapproved credit card, rack up the bill and the person whose name it is really in doesn't know until it's too late!!!!! Deal directly with your bank or through the mail. Link to comment
Scorpion Fury
wait, did you call them or did they call you? Link to comment
DN
Look at the small print - there may be something that negates the approval if a credit check isn't favourable. Either that or they may require you deposit funds in the credit card account. Link to comment
NowandZen
With credit, the golden rule applies. He who has the gold makes the rules. Lots of companies do the comeons, and what you end up with is not what you thought. There's a reason why the agreements are pages and pages. In my case, I got a HELOC two years ago, didn't think much about it, and recently they cut off my line because they said houses have declined in value. Link to comment

alli
Check your free yearly credit report from all three major beaureaus link removed Yep, that is a great thing to take advantage of. But they only show you the accounts you have & whether or not they are in good standing. You have to pay $5 to see your actual credit score number, but to me that $5 is well worth it. Just pay attention to which type of score they give you (vantage or fico, as they are on different scales) Since there are 3 companies you can check once a year, you could actually check one every 4 months & keep a constant eye on it. redrose85
I'm in Canada, so I have to contact Equifax. The stupid thing is, I accidentally threw out my most recent credit report (from probably 2 years ago) RIGHT before I got this offer from my bank. I have (had?) bad credit. It never stood a chance against my ex. Bleh. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed because it's becoming apparent that credit cards really aren't an optional choice anymore, you need them for a lot of things- booking trips, renting movies, sudden expenses, etc... Yea...you need a brand new credit report. In the us...if you are denied credit....you are entitled to a free report. So perhaps you can do that if the card falls through. Link to comment
redrose85
Hopefully. I'm looking to get my driver's license and buy my first car, so I'd like to know before I buy a car, if I need to still be paying off any old debts that may have popped up. Link to comment
