george237
i wanna get out the ukm need to save cash first i guess lol Not always, find a job online ans start the week after you arive. Stay at a cheap motel the first week or so till you can find an appartment. The only cash u will need is enough for room, gas, and food for 3 - 4 weeks. Link to comment
alli
My sister & I travelled through Latin America for 3 weeks a couple years ago. She checked out a few books from the local library as a guide. Those books were very detailed in places to stay, bus routes, prices for motels (if you could call them that, haha) etc. The information came from people who were physically there. One campground-like place that we stayed in Mexico was detailed right down to the fact that there were outdoor lockers there for storage. THAT was how we got everywhere. Those books were like the bible. One for each country. It helped that she spoke spanish. If you are looking at travelling somewhere unfamiliar or to a country that speaks a different language you should definitely bring a travel buddy. You don't NEED to speak the language to get by, but even knowing a little helps. Also before you go, make an appt with your Dr & get all the shots you need for travelling in that area. I think I got a malaria shot before I went. You will also want to look online & see what the current situation is in the areas you plan to travel, such as a recent increase in muggings, violence toward outsiders, bus hijackings (that one was always in the back of my mind). We did encounter a couple "questionable" situations, so even taking precautions & being careful will not prevent everything. But we made it back alive & relatively uninjured. There's still a couple things that happened that I would never tell my mom! Link to comment
Jonboy582
Well I am thinking of going to Australia travelling for a year, so am kind of in the same boat. Pretty much there are two ways you can go about things. 1. The expensive but potentially more fun way, you save up. Then travel wherever staying in cheap hotels and enjoying yourself and spending most days doing something fun. 2. You work as you go around, living a nomadic life style. Get a job somewhere earn a little money then once you have enough to move on ditch the job and move on. You may find this more rewarding as you have more of a life experience and get to meet so many more people. If you go to a place like Australia the cool thing is your money will literally double (pounds sterling not dollars). As everything is like the same price but our currency is twice as strong There are specialist forums out there that will help you plan such trips. Im sure a quick google search will uncover some. Oh yeah and as for the issues, sort out as many as you can before you go if there sortable. Will allow you to concentrate more on your trip so you don't spend the whole time thinking about them. And go for it, it will be great and probably life changing Link to comment

As everything is like the same price but our currency is twice as strong That is a good point; in some places your money goes a lot further than what you're used to. The most expensive part of my trip was the $500 plane ticket. Taking buses through Mexico was expensive; comparable to what it would cost in the US. But I travelled through the entire country of Guatemala on $10. And we probably didn't pay more than $5 for a place to sleep each night. Sometimes cheaper. Except Belize, we paid $10 for a room right on the beach. Granted, it was nothing fancy but you can't beat that. Link to comment

I prefer Belize though, nice beaches, and better rain forest. The best part was we sailed out to this island and it was like a PERFECT island. It was on the reef, it only had 3 inhabitants. It had a bar, was completely white sand and big sea shells with some coconut trees. This bloke climbed a tree and got some coconuts down for us and chopped them in half with his machete. Needless to say I got very sun burnt that day. Which leads me onto my next point. If its sunny remember sun cream, don't ruin your trip by getting burnt (which im an expert at). Link to comment

I loved both, it's so hard to say which I liked more but I would probably have to say Guatemala. Don't get me wrong, the beach was awesome (as was eating coconuts everyday) But Guatemala had more to it... the ruins, the history, the volcanos surrounding the crystal clear lake (Lago de Atitlan). I will tell you that I was not a fan of Guatemala City, at least the part that I was in. But all I saw of Belize was a couple of the Cayes. I didn't even know Belize had a rain forest! lol. I would probably love Belize more if I saw the rest of it! Link to comment
alli
Jealous..... Well, I left out the unpleasant parts of the trip! I was almost kidnapped (almost being the key word there), a very ticked-off bus driver broke the window a couple seats back from where I was on the bus with a machete, shattering glass all over the people sitting in the seats. I sat next to a lady holding a very sick baby on the bus, I always wonder whether that baby is still alive or not. And somehow I got ringworm in 3 places on my neck. I got some medication in Guatemala that made it go away slowly. By the time I got home they looked like hickies, so I had the unfortunate situation as whether to let people think I got lucky or got a fungus. I wouldn't trade any of it though with the experiences I gained. Except the near-kidnapping part, my heart was pounding out of my chest.. one of my scariest moments ever. Not to deter the OP, it was all great!! Link to comment

I got in trouble I saw a fury caterpillar and started stroking it. And some guide grabbed me and was like what the hell are you doing those are extremely dangerous and can cause your whole arm to swell up and kill children. Then in belieze I was swimming in some reads and this American sufer guy who has obviosely lived there for like 30 years, dragged me out of the water and said deadly fish live in there lol. Don't get poisinous things like that in England. And this moves onto anouther point also be careful of poisinous things. We are pretty much limited to adders here, everything seems to want to kill you abroad Link to comment

Jonboy582
I just got back from an impromptu sailing holiday and I would thoroughly recommend it to you. It was amazing, the trips are heavily subsidised as well as it is a charity. You could always use it as one stop on a travelling experience. They are doing a 25 day sail from the Caribbean to the Azores for £499. That includes your food and accommodation and I can promise it will be a life changing experience. It would be very hard and for a couple of days you will most likely be sea sick but it will pay off. The site is [link removed[/url]. I myself just spent 7 days sailing round the canary islands on a twin mast tall ship like the ones strait out of pirates of the Caribbean lol. It trueley was a life changing experince, you improve team work and social skills as well as having a great time, meeting loads of new interesting people. Link to comment
Jonboy582
No you should save your money. Traveling is a waste of time. What's the point of having money if you don't enjoy it. Besides employers prefer someone who has life experiences it could be the edge that leads him to getting a better job one day that pays twice as much as he earns now. I would happily spend my life penyless and happy traveling the world than rich and nothing to spend it on. There is so much more out there that you might never get a chance to see again. You could die tomorow or spend your life saying maybe I will do it next year and before you know it your too old. Link to comment
