jengh
Does anyone have ANY idea what this could be? I've had a relatively bad sore throat for the past 2 days. I just woke up (the pain was so bad I couldn't sleep) and looked at my tonsils and they're VERY swollen and the right one has blood on it. I gargled with salt water and spit out blood (not a lot but enough to freak me out). I took some ibuprofin before I looked at the thing, hoping that it might take the swelling down a bit. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't think it's strep, there's no pus (I get strep a couple times each year and don't really have any other symptoms. I know, I know...you guys aren't doctors but I'm just looking for suggestions. It's really freaking me out and I don't really have the money to go to the doctor... It hurts so bad I'm on the verge of tears and it's too early to call my mom Thank you. Link to comment

jengh
Can you go to a hospital ?? arent they open 24hrs in your country? I can't afford an ER visit... the urgent care center is a lot cheaper (60-ish as opposed to god knows what)... and ma'am, i guess you need to get back to bed and at least relax instead of straining in front of the pc. android
i forgot about portable computers... did you try out honey and lemon? is it any better? try not to cough much, it'll hurt bad. Link to comment
jengh
I don't have any lemon on hand, but I made some tea and put honey in it--seemed to soothe it a bit. Luckily, I don't have a cough at all!!! Man, that would be really painful Link to comment
15 Storeys High
You don't always get pus with strep throat and without being there to look at it.....it sounds like strep to me, which means you need antibiotics as it's a bacterial infection. Which means you need to go to the urgent care centre. In the meantime, while you're waiting for that to open....do you have any meds containing paracetamol? If so....take a dose. Link to comment
hey jo
since you are already lying down (so i doubt you would be able to read this) make sure that you lie on your side, this is what we usually do during post-operative tonsillectomies - i know you didn't have the procedure but since you're bleeding, it wouldn't hurt if you did. Just try to cough out the blood if it's still bleeding, hopefully it has subsided somehow by now. If it is still bleeding profusely from the tonsils, and if you're already feeling rather funny, go to the doctor like ASAP. They might prescribe you with ABs and pain relief like most people have already mentioned. Link to comment

I was hoping it wouldn't be strep. I guess the plus side is the antibiotics are cheap for it. Sigh. Paracetamol--that's tylenol or asprin, right? I took some of that about an hour ago. Thanks Link to comment
15 Storeys High
Read the ingredients list for the tylenol...see what it tells you...whether it has paracetamol in. What time did you take your ibuprofen....if it was more than four hours ago then take another dose of that too. Don't take any aspirin....it's a blood thinner so if you're already having spots of blood (which is probably due to the inflammation) then it could make it worse. I'm not diagnosing it as strep throat because I can't see it but it sounds like that's what it is. You need to see a doc to get an official diagnosis.... Link to comment
jengh
Right, right...no asprin. Of course that would be bad--I don't know why that didn't occur to me. Too early, I guess. I took the ibuprofin just one hour ago, though only 500mg so not too high a dosage (only had one left in the bottle) I need to figure out how I can scrape together enough money for this... stupid holidays Link to comment

Paracetamol--that's tylenol or asprin, right? I took some of that about an hour ago. Thanks Aspirin is NOT paracetamol. They strongly discourage the use of aspirin for some patients eg if they are on pre-op because it will further cause bleeding (it is an anticoagulant/antiplatelet, it breaks down clotted blood and makes it 'thin' hence it exacerbates bleeding). Paracetamol would be Acetaminophen - Tylenol is paracetamol, aspirin isn't. Grumpy Old Man - Sorry I just got a bit worried that you might have taken aspirin. ==== wow too fast. crap. Link to comment
jengh
ahh, okay--googled it. Acetaminophen. We call it that in the US, that's why I was confused =) Link to comment
