It's just something that was built into a cultural "must do" for some strange reason, probably D. Clark's show to have something for the cameras to focus on after the ball drops... Link to comment

I am in the same boat. I know plenty of people who had someone to kiss on New Year's eve...but the rest of the year was miserable for the couple. The one minute lip kiss in front of family and friends at the stroke of midnight is just a big show...the New Year's eve cliché...about as trite as singing Auld Lang Syne and watching the ball drop in Times Square. That kiss does not represent the relationship...it is just the show. What really matters is what is going on between the couple the rest of the minutes and hours of each and every day. Later on I found out that she had been fighting with him post midnight lip lock! In another few months that relationship was history. Link to comment
