Dealing with an immature family member...

Has anyone dealt with something like this before?

 

I live with my mother and brother who's in his late 20s, who hasn't had a job, hasn't gone to college or a trade school. He doesn't smoke, drink or do drugs but there are other things about him that are aggravating. He acts bossy sometimes and can be manipulative. He seems to dislike people in general and doesn't socialize much. He doesn't do his own laundry or anything, either. He's been told to get a job but claims to already be working on something (he sort of is but not as much as he should be). Attempts to convince him usually turn into a huge argument and I'm tired of it. Most of the time I feel like I'm on edge, waiting for the next argument or outburst to happen.

 

What would you do about this? Is there anything that can be done? Could it be a mental defect or something else? I don't know what to do (neither does my mother). He's chronologically an adult so it's harder now to force him to do anything...

I would just leave him alone since he's an adult already. If he wants to messed-up then that's his problem, you aren't his psychologist. Mental defect, probably but I would say stubborness along with laziness.

Sounds like he needs a hard dose of reality...your mom should give him a month to sack up his stuff and if he doesn't she should cut him loose...
