Pit Bulls

I don't believe for a second they are just harmless sweeties who didn't get the proper training. My cat was just sleeping on the porch, SLEEPING!, and the neighbors pit bull ran out of their yard, picked her up and throttled her to death while running around the neighborhood. One of the other neighbors tried to help and the dog turned on him! We all reported the dog to the police and she was taken away. I don't know what happened to her, and I don't care!

That could have been any breed of dog.

I had a pittbull puppy attacked and killed by a german shepherd a few years back while he was in my yard, in a fence. The german shepherd jumped the fence and attacked my dog killing him. Does that give me a right to label a german shepherd as dangerous just because of that? On top of him killing my dog, he bit my mom and messed her hand and arm up pretty bad she ended up going through 2 surgeries because of it.

An irresponsible owner was the cause of that, not the breed.

A woman in my town has the sweetest pit bull. I ran into her once when I was running errands, and that dog was a gem. Neighbor where we used to live had a very sweet Doberman mix.

Still, I personally would never get a dog from a breed that had a reputation for aggression, especially if I had children. I think I would be too scared of what might happen, and would not want to have to worry about my dog around others. I have enough anxiety already, lol!

It is awful when owners get dogs they cannot control. One of my cats was killed by a German Shepherd, while I watched! He was being walked by the owner, who could not control him, broke free of the leash and cornered the cat. It stalked him for awhile, and my mother tried to bait him away, but it was really too dangerous a situation for her to really intervene. It was terrible to watch, but at least that was only a cat. It later broke loose and came into our garden and was poised to attack our other cat: my father came out with his pitchfork and scared him away! A couple of years later he bit a little girl, not sure what came of it ... I just don't understand what goes through the minds of the owners that they can sit back and do nothing when they know their dog is a smoking gun.

my first pit bull was actually afraid of cats. My neighbor had a cat and I would literally have to pick my dog up and carry him in past the cat of the cat was out on the stairs. Haha. He was such a baby.

My neighbors also had a choclate lab the samne age as my pit and they would play togehter alot in the yard. The lab actually but my pit on 2 different occasions, hard enough to draw blood. The pit never retaliated.

they are pretty straight forward on what went on, so be careful reading.

That story just breaks my heart. I used to like Vick, but now I wish I could have just 20 minutes with him i'd take every vicious dog known to man and put them in a cage together and allow the dogs to tear him apart just how he allowed and watched the dogs tear each other apart and enjoyed it. Then i'd videotape it and post it all over the net. Ok.. sorry.. Yeah that story gets me a little heated.

Thankfully some of the pups were able to be saved, but unfortunately alot of them had to be put down

I just saw a story about this on Animal Planets top 10 animal stories of 2008. The judge allowed all Vick's dogs to live and he was forced to pay 980,000$ towards their welfare and rehabilitation, it was an unprecidented case.

Saw some of the dogs on tv too, they were doing well!

A few of them had to be put down they were beaten up so bad and extremely aggressive and were older dogs. But most of them went into a safe haven for Pitts called 'Adopt a Bull' out of Georgia which i'm really good friends with the guy who runs it as well as all the puppies under a certain age were able to be adopted out because they hadnt been trained and taunted yet. Actually considered adopting one of the puppies but didn't really want to take that chance with them being around my other dogs knowing how they were bred.

Pits are illegal here in the UK. There was a spate of dogs being seized for being 'of type' - i.e. Pit or Pit cross. The huge majority of these dogs are actually Staff or Staff crosses.

I own a dog that is predominantly Rott. She has the size and looks of a Rott, but has a splash of lab in her. She is a rescue that I got when she was 7 weeks old - my son was five. She is a honey because I ensured from the get go that I was the boss, she was socialised well both with other animals and humans. In a fit of madness earlier this year, I took in an unknown quantity - a Staff cross who had been, by all accounts, used as bait in dogfighting. He is a total dote. Thick as two short planks, but the sweetest funniest dog ever. My Rott is territorial and is very leery of strange men. I live alone in a remote area so I'm damned glad that she is. With the proper introductions, she's absolutely fine and more likely to sit on your knee than eat your face. Similarly, the Staff cross just wants to cuddle up to a warm body and snore. He has no dog aggression (which is probably why he was dumped - useless for fighting as he's completely wimpy and non-aggressive).

They're my loyal and loving companions. They cuddle up in bed with my son, lick him awake in the morning.

Train them well, treat them with respect and you have a fabulous companion for life. Put them in the hands of an idiot and you have a serious problem.

I probably already said this a million times but Mock reminded me:

My ex-friend's gigantic Rottweiler (about 150 lbs) snapped and tried to rip me to pieces when I was feeding him a treat. It was terrifying, I was curled in a ball, he was going for my face and his owners only response was to smack him in the head. I still have a scar on my arm, I was cut up for months.

I don't blame that dog a single bit. Any time the dog would bark, they would slap him. He was just a mess as a result of their ignorance.

No bad dog, just bad owner!
