BoneMachine
There's no research that suggests it would. And there's a lot of intelligent students and professors here at the uni that drinks a lot of coffee, seemingly without any nagative effects. Why wound it impair cognitive ability? Link to comment

BoneMachine
Different brains work differently. Coffee (caffeine really) can permanentely affect cognitive ability, but all the reasearch i found indicated either improvement or no change at all. Seems to be especially beneficial to women. link removed Link to comment
LanceVanceDance
All studies regarding the effects of coffee and caffeine on the body contradict themselves. There is currently no scientific consensus. For every article you can post on the subject, you can find another article elsewhere saying the opposite. Link to comment

I don't think I think as clearly as when I do not drink coffee. My memory in particular I think has been affected. Link to comment
IndigoEye
Haven't had caffein in twenty years, haven't had a headache in twenty years. Link to comment
Ammy
That is the bit that interests me. I don't think I think as clearly as when I do not drink coffee. My memory in particular I think has been affected. Caffeine increases anxiety and makes you hypervigilant which can impair concentration to specific things and memory... A bit of anxiety is good for functioning, too much and you can't concentrate and focus. Ammy Link to comment

Coffee seems to have some harmful effects when you go over a certain amount, but as long as you dont drink too much it dosent seem to be any harmful effects. It actually has a lot of positive effects. Apart from different amounts of coffee, most of the reasearch on the subject seems pretty similar, it's good as long as you dont drink too much. And coffee is one of the most researched food we have. Link to comment

You can find links to a few articles on wikipedia's entry: link removed (definitely not the be-all end-all on coffee, but it's a start) If you read the sources, you'll find that they contain many "may", "may not", unknowns, and conflicting results. I enjoy drinking coffee but I'm also health-conscious, which is why I used to research this. Link to comment
CaptainPlanet
Yeah I used to drink 14 cups a day. I loved the stuff. Eased it down a bit. Think I had about 5 today. Still too much. Link to comment
Raiden
Everything is fine in moderation. Obviously 14 cups of a stimulant per day is asking for trouble. But keep yourself under 5 cups a day, and it's all good. Link to comment

But keep yourself under 5 cups a day, and it's all good. On that note when they say "5 cups max per day", a cup of coffee is 6 oz, smaller than the standard 8 oz fo[und in a "cup". I normally have 2 cups of coffee a day, but my mugs hold a lot more than 6 oz so really by the "5 at most per day" standard I probably intake 3 cups per day. Something to keep in mind if you're trying to keep track of how much coffee you drink. I hope that's not confusing. Makes sense to me! Link to comment
amtjrtcet
I have two small cups a day. I HAVE to, otherwise I get a headache. And you don't want to be around me if I haven't had any coffee.... But I've never heard it makes you stupid. Who knows... Link to comment
BoneMachine
Yeah, 14 cups will mess you up. Reduce by at least ten cups. Im noy sure what the coffee itself would do. But that much caffeine would affect your sleep, and that absolutely has an effect on your cognitive abilities. Link to comment
waveseer
I drink 2-4 cups of coffee a day. About every three months I stop completely and give my nervous system a break. The other thing I do is cut it 50/50 with vanilla soy milk which reduces many of the harmful effects. Tea would be my next choice if coffee isn't available. I am more smiley when I am off caffeine entirely. Link to comment
gracerules2008
Does drinking too much coffee impair cognitive ability ? Absolutely not. That's another ridiculous myth. Don't worry about it. I drink a cup of coffee just about everyday at my workplace. Link to comment
