What are people's views and experiences of this unfortunate trait in some people?

Do insensitive people wake up one day and realise that being insensitive is not the way forward, or are they simply unaware of the consequences of their actions?

Will they always be insensitive?

I don't think there is a one size fits all view of insensitivity. Some people are very selfish and self-involved and thereforee insensitve to others. Some people are indeed kind but on the eccentric side so their insensitivity is not due to selfishness. I think everyone, at some point in time, has been insensitive for whatever reason, be it not understanding the other person's point, having a bad day, feeling frustrated etc. So I would say that insensitivity is a conscious choice in people who are routinely self-involved and selfish, but may not necessarily be a conscious choice when insensitivity is the exception rather than the norm.
