Mysterious Gurl
Hiya! Basically I have joined the gym and have been going as much as possible to reduce my weight but I really want to aim to get ride of love handles. I think if I was to reduce them, then I would physically look more slimmer. I'm 19 and weigh 12 stone and I'm about 5ft6. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on how to get rid of them? What I should do at the gym, what I should/should not eat and how long it takes to get rid of them?? I've researched on the internet but I get different stories and I really aren't sure what to do. Many thanks! MG x
kuiks8
you can't really work spot treat your body. The best thing to do would be to do 20-30 min of cardio 3-5x per week. There are also numerous exercises you can do for you obliques if you just search the internet!

Aviatormy
Well if I am correct, 12 stone= 168lbs. At 5'6", that is a little bit more then just "love handles" IMO First of all, congratulations! Making the decision to lose weight is a great step towards happiness! So at 168lbs and being 5'6" I would think that you want to drop about 30lbs (depending on your build) Are you very curvy? Are you top heavy? Small, Medium or large bottom? Perhaps you would share a picture of yourself to give us a good idea of where your "problem" areas are? The best way to lose those unwanted lbs is really just a matter of a great diet. You would be surprised how much better you can look by just eating right. One of the worst foods for you that is eaten just about every day is SUGAR. I would definitely cut down if not cut OUT all sugars in your diet. If you are going to be working out, then I would keep your calorie intake between 1500-1700. Keep your Monosaturated fats between 40-50grams and load up on protein. Fish and poultry are a great source of protein and they tend to be low in fat. Good snacks for the times when you just can not take it anymore are granola bars, baby carrots, protein bars, whole grain wheat bread and the ever so famous peanut or almond butter. Start off with a workout routine that you are comfortable with. Lift light weight with a lot of reps followed by about 15 minutes of intense cardio and then 15 minutes of low paced cardio. PixelPusher
14lb equals one stone, right? kuiks8 is correct... you can't really "spot" treat a specific area. You can do sit ups and crunches, etc but they won't help you burn any fat off that area... they just tone the muscle underneath. Best thing to do is cardio, cardio, cardio! And eat right. Lifting weights to tone your muscles helps too. Muscle tissue burns fat so the more muscle you have, the more fat your body burns. If you don't want to bulk up with muscle, then do lighter weight and higher reps. Build muscle: higher weight with fewer reps (ie 25lbs at 8-10 reps) Tone existing muscle: lower weight with more reps (ie 10lbs at 12-15 reps) Good luck! Mythical_Suicide
Well if I am correct, 12 stone= 168lbs. At 5'6", that is a little bit more then just "love handles" IMO Depends on how she is built. I only weigh a small amount less than she does but I don't have as much obvious excess weight on my body as most people would think when I tell them how much I weigh. (If that even makes sense the way I worded it.)

kuiks8
You don't need to put out the money for a personal trainer...there is so much information available on the internet for working out! I do turbo jam 3x per week minimum and it has been amazing for my body, especially my abs!

Aviatormy
"spot" treating? lol I agree. Can not really be done. However, have you guys seen that documentary about that guy that only worked out his right arm? His right arm was HUGE!!!! and his other arm was insanely skinny in comparison. I thought that was hilarious. I should try that.

kuiks8
Personal trainers help you target the areas you want, they are actually knowledgeable. while knowledgeable they are also very expensive and it can be intimidating to go to a personal trainer so i am just saying that there are a lot of resources to help you trim down your middle that don't cost near as much money. Women's Health is a great resource for tips on working out and eating properly as well. I have done my personal training and studied Kiniesiology. If you wanted some specific exercises feel free to PM me.

Aviatormy
What you said in the 3rd sentence still didn't "make up" for what you said in your first sentence. Just clearing up your assumption that just because she's "x" amount of lbs she has more than love handles. I dont feel the need to "make up" for anything. Thats why I stated "IMO" I dont think that I would ever see a man or woman that is 5'6" and 168 with just a "love handle" problem. If you are that short, weigh that much (big breasts, big butt or not).... you are overweight and the problem is much more then love handles. Show me one person at that height and weight that is fit all around with the exception of love handles. I bet you can not find one. So lets get back on topic for the OP and stop trying to stick up for the OP. There is nothing wrong with the OP. I am just very knowledgeable about fitness and I am giving my HONEST opinion. Thanks. P.S. Go ahead and have the last word if you would like as I am not going to sit here and argue over something that will get way off topic. sophie274
For now, I would just focus on the weight loss. Chances are if you are carrying extra flab in the love handle area, it will be one of the first things to go when you slim down - so there's hope there! I would try to mix in both cardio and weights so that you are also toning. Adding muscle also increases your metabolism. I know I found weights a bit daunting at first, and felt like I had no idea what I was doing. I hired a personal trainer, and I have really enjoyed working with him. His rate is fairly inexpensive compared to others I have seen, but since I work out with him on a regular basis it is a sizable chunk of money. If you can afford one, great. If not, I think it could still be helpful to make an appointment for just one or two sessions so he could devise a weight training program for you and walk you through it. I also enjoy group fitness classes. There's one at my gym called "butts and guts" - ab and butt work - which would probably tone up your "problem area". One note though: if you are starting to build muscle around your butt, it can make you look fatter if you have not lost the fat that is on top. Bottom line: watching your diet is really important. Good luck! Love handles are the worst. I'm trying so hard to get rid of mine, uggh.
ghost69
cardio cardio cardio. an watch the diet. you can tone up those muscle to help with the outlining of the area. side bends, twists, crunches, etc.
Mysterious Gurl
Okay everyone calls them "love handles". I'm a curvy built person but I look wide rather than fat. I do attend the gym and do cardio and then finish up with some stomach crunches as recommended by a gym advisor. I just aren't sure what I need to be doing to get rid of these "fat deposits" at either side of my waist. It's just getting me down, especially when I look at photos from a year ago. Can I eat pasta? I've tried cutting down food portions and drinking more water and I don't eat much sugary foods anymore. I'd rather not post a photo incase someone recognises me, it can be a suprisingly small world. 12 Stone is like 75 pounds. I'm tall so I don't look so sluggish but still I notice the difference. VTR-RC51
If your thinking about a personal trainer, you should re-think it first. Though they may be a good option, you have to be ready and determined or you won't see any results and you will wasted a lot of money as with any other option I guess. If you are really motivated and determined to get to your goal, then I would recommend P90x. link removed At 2.5 months I lost 25 lbs. It's a 90 day routine hence the name and they give you a so many food options that you can mix and match so you don't get bored. You just have to really want it and you'll see the difference soon enough. I've heard Tony has come up with a new 10 minute trainer that is supposed to work wonders as well. Haven't tried it so I don't know, but if it's anything like P90x, it must work and it must be worth it. Sorry if I sound like a P90X salesman, but it worked for me so I promote it!
