Debbie37
...Because it claws the furniture, and sometimes pees in the house. Is this reasonable? My friend's family is doing this to their 5 year old cat. I'm feeling pretty sad about it, and somewhat pissed off. I think its irresponsible of them. The sad thing is, that truth be told, this cat is extremely shy and doesn`t have a great personality. He`s not a very good looking cat, and at 5 years old hes not exactly at prime adopting age. I think his chances of finding a family are pretty slim. I`m not sure if they still euthanise animals they can`t find homes for at our local SPCA. I hope not. I feel really bad for this cat, and I`ve lost some respect for my friends parents. Link to comment
jengh
awwww, how sad for kitty. my cat has some issues sometimes (clawing, peeing, fleas, etc) but i didn't adopt her under the impression she would be the model cat (is there such thing with cats?). A responsible pet owner takes the good with the bad. Maybe they could put an ad in the paper or on craigslist to ensure adoption? Link to comment
Debbie37
Thats a good idea, Ilovemybabycairo. I just texted my friend to suggest it. Thing is they are planning on giving it tomorow, haveing made the suggestion today You are obviously a loving cat owner, its good to know that you stand by your own cat! Link to comment
lil_baby_girl
I am a cat lover. i have had lots of cats through out my life. i feel bad for the cat yes but if the owners can not take care of it then its a good thing they give the cat to the SPCA, if a cat is worked with they can become loveable and not so shy. i have seen older cats be adopted all the time. my family adopted a cat that is 8 years old thats almost 9 years old now. i wish the best of luck to the cat though. Gracelove
That's really sad! It certainly isn't fair to the cat, because he/she will probably be put down. Most people want kittens, and aside from that there are limited space and resources. Tragic! Link to comment
Debbie37
They can take care of it though, they are just chosing to give it up be cause they don`t like it acting like a cat basically! Link to comment
caro33
I know this is kind of off-topic, but if I could make world public policy I would ban pet shops - if people want pets let them look for them properly or take others' unwanted pets. I have known people who buy cute dogs from pet shop windows and then not want them afterward, and it think it's just awful. But at least the young ones have a chance. This cat might be chancing it if it's not attractive or young. Why not put an ad in the local paper? I hope they take that advice and spend the money to do the right thing by the animal. I think people adopt pets far more if they see the animal and know it came from a good home. I am a lover of German Shepherds and other larger varieties. I remember looking for a pet for a friend's family years ago, and going to the local Lost Dogs' Home. There was this huge area for the larger dogs, set aside from the main area, and it was full of sad and maladjusted looking Shepherds and Rottweilers. You knew they had no hope, it was so sad. My own dog was an abandoned Shepherd and he was wonderful, but I never would have had him had he not been foisted on me by a neglectful housemate. Link to comment
HealingHandsWarmHeart
If the cat is clawing up the furniture and that is one of the main reasons they want to put the cat in a shelter - then why don't they get the cat declawed? I'm VERY against that ..but i'm also VERY against a cat euthinizing who is used to living in a home being put in a shelter- and from what you described above.. it doesn't seem like this cat will be adopted - older and a not so great personality or visual appeal... BTW it is my understanding that the SPCA does euthanize animals... link removed Link to comment
annie24
can you take the cat in? personally, i think some people are just bad pet owners. do they have lots of scratching posts around the house? if you give the cat alternatives, they may go after those instead of going after the furniture. and peeing, did they ever take it to a doctor? the cat sounds like it may be sick. cats don't typically pee around the house. unless it's an unneutered male who is spraying. Debbie37
Hey annie24 I can't take the cat in, because my life isn't going to be stable for the next 10 years or so (I'm going to be living in residence, which doesn't allow pets, then moving around and traveling.) I feel bad about not being able to take the cat, but I know that taking an animal I can't take care of won't solve anything. I suggested scratching posts, even offered to give them an old one of ours, but they said its more the peeing problem. the cat is male, but to my understanding its neutered. To my experience cats do sometimes pee in the house without having health problems. I sent her a text asking for an update, but shes at work so I don't know when I will get a reply. Link to comment
Debbie37
Hmm I'm also very against declawing cats, but it sounds like it may be better than giving it away to get put down. I will suggest that. Link to comment

This cat might be chancing it if it's not attractive or young.. You should never buy an animal like a dog or cat from a pet shop even if you are a model owner. They are usually the product of puppy or kitten mills and are bred carelessly to get the maximum number of "products" out. They often have genetic problems and behaviour problems (from being taken too early from the mother and placed in a cage). Any person looking to obtain a dog or cat should adopt or find a good breeder. Link to comment
thejigsup
One of my cats scratches on anything in sight. He is also loving, protective of family members, kind, and as loyal as any dog. I can always get new furniture, but I could never get another Ming. My cats mean more to me than almost anything! I love each and every one of them to bits. My God, I'm becoming the Crazy Cat Lady! FuzzyKitten
Cats do sometimes pee where they're not supposed to without having medical problems. There are medications to correct this behavior! If they take the cat to the vet, why have they not addressed this problem? Link to comment
Debbie37
Her cat WAS a pet store cat, I found out yesterday. So that explains the behavior problems. I suggested to them that they put an add in craigslist or the paper, but I'm not sure if they will. I said goodbye to him yesterday, when I was at their house. He usually runs away from me, but this time he let me pet him. Poor cat, this sort of irresponsibility really annoys me. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will let you know what happens.
