metrogirl
What is the longest you have stayed with one employer? I have been at my current job 18 1/2 years. I truly feel blessed to have such a great job that pays well and offers excellent benefits. Although I can retire from the job after 23 years of service, I will likely stay on with them as I will be much to young to 'retire'. I'm considering going back to school to get a degree in Transportation. My theory is I will have 23+ plus years under my belt in the company and with a degree I would be able to pursue a higher position in this company. In the event I move out of California, I could in all probability find a decent job with another major transit company. Staying with the same company after the 23 years of service would probably be the wisest choice wouldn't it? The thought of going back to school at the age of 38 is frightening. Link to comment
sidehop
That's a long time. Job security is a great thing especially with today's weak economy. I worked for a company that had a huge potential but was laid off due to the Arthur Anderson scandal. Longest is close to four years with the last company I worked for (healthcare). I think it's always good to have additional education whether it's in the same field/industry or something completely different. I'm going back to school this fall but looking back there were people in my class in their 40's and 50's. Education is for everyone. Link to comment
Supa_gurl
Wow that is a long time. Circumstances kept me from staying at any job for a lengthy amount of time. It seems I always choose place that lay off or fire for stupid reasons. The longest I was at one place was 6 years, that was the job I had before my current one at which I have been for 4.5 years. I would definitely stay where you are, it continuing education is an excellent idea. You can never learn too much. Link to comment
Scorpion Fury
That's awesome. I quit a job after 4 years because I knew I would never go anywhere. And it was a major company that was going under, still is atleast in the retail end. I worked in dispatching. And while I was really close to the guys I dispatched, I knew I had to go. Plus, I was deciding to move out of state, and everything just seemed to fit. I do miss that job terribly, though. But I knew it was a waste of time. Promotions were few and far between, and I hated the HR manager, and she hated me. Don't be scared to go back to school at 38. My mom is 48 and she went back to school a few years ago to become a nurse. It's hard, but she's got one year left and she'll be a nurse. At the age of 49 My niece (6 years old) said, "Grandma...why are you going to school? You're gonna be an OLD nurse." Hahahaha. Lots of people are going back to school in their adult life. I've had classes with people in their 30's and 40's and even older. Link to comment

Jelina
I've never had an actual job. Just summer jobs. So my longest job has been for about 3 months. I can't wait to get a good job and stay there for a while....I really need the money desperately right now. Link to comment
ImThatGirl
38 is NOT too old to go to school!!!!!!! I think you should so go for it! Absolutely! And, I think it's awesome that you've stayed at the same company for so many years. I have been at my job for 8 years. I plan to go back to school soon as I can figure out how to fit it in. And it may very well be late 30's but I'll be going! I have a degree in Business Management.. Guess I was thinking it'd be a good move to get a good job. But meh... I can't stand the business world. And will not work in it for the rest of my years! Link to comment

I work full time and then some, plus I take care of the grandbabies now. It probably wouldn't have been much of a dilemma before because my boys are teenagers and can fend for themselves, but enter the grandchildren and that sorta throws a kink in the plan. Not giving up hope though. I will have to find a way to make this work. Link to comment

poloplayer
Are we saying a certain role? Or with the same employer? Almost 3 years with my current firm, but a little over a year in my new role (completely different title and responsibilities). 3 years, and it seems like an eternity (I like it, but 3 years is very long for a 20 something from what I've seen), but what's next for me is already in the pipeline. Crazyaboutdogs
This is the longest I have been at a job...so far 7 years. There are pluses and minuses with being at the same job for life. On the plus side you have the full pension and you never have to worry about trying to find another job. On the minus side is stagnation and boredom with the job. I have seen lots of "lifers" who count the days until they can retire. If you are at the top levels which allow you to connect yourself to other colleagues so that you are constantly learning and connecting...then staying in the same job doesn't seem to result in high dissatisfaction levels because the person is constantly being challenged and is learning. It becomes a problem at the lower levels where you are doing the same thing day in and day out and not growing and learning. Link to comment
StrawberryYogurt
5.6 years and counting. They pay well, low stress, get to post here. Link to comment

I like that I have learned about many aspects of the company from the different departments that I have worked in. There is still much to learn and fortunately for me, they have a training department where I can take different little courses to learn even more. Link to comment

Downtown during rush hour = too crazy!!! Oh snap, was that you that I almost hit? LMAO No, I actually live and work in Los Angeles, and I don't drive the buses. I couldn't put myself out there with the public like that. I worked in customer service for 9 years and I have come to the conclusion that I am not meant to do that line of work. The public broke me.....LOL It's sad but true. Now I deal with mechanics and managers, where it is safe. Link to comment
