Financial Aid Guidance Needed

Recommended Posts

I received enough grants, etc. to cover the cost of tuition. I've also been granted two loans one subsidized another unsubsidized. How much more money than tuition do you think I should borrow? I know books are a huge expense, I'll need some extra money for transportation, what else? And of the 10K being loaned how much should I take? All, none, est. amount? I don't want to end up borrowing a bunch more than I need but I also don't want to be hard pressed either.

I don't know about the states, but our school usually have an estimates for our costs. It should be on their broshure. The living at home cost and living away from home cost. Transportation, you can look it up and calculate it yourself.

Also, if you could borrow books instead, you should look into it. They lose their value dramatically as soon as you buy them. It's ridiculous and more often than not, you don't really need the text. If you do, going to the library isn't that big of a deal when you're saving around 1000 dollars a year.

& Not a lot of people look into school's bursary. There's no fee for applying for them. I get ~2k a year from bursaries alone. Free money!

Keep in mind that even if you don't take out the maximum amount they offer you, right away, if you find you need more money you can always go back and take out the rest later.

Of course, the subsidized loans are much better than the unsubsidized ones. If I were you- I take out the whole amount of the subsidized loan and as little of the unsubsidized loan as possible. Try to sit with a financial aid counselor and see if you can estimate costs for books, materials, etc.
