New York; Possibly moving there. How dangerous/noisy is it really?

Hey all,

Hopefully I can get some authentic NYers to answer this.

Basically, I want to move out east as soon as I can; just tired of California. I am considering either Boston or New York.

I know I would love Boston, but part of me really wants to try living in NYC. Now, I'm getting all those preconceived notions and skewed perceptions of New York. It's super loud, you get mugged every other day, etc.

So, my question is... How dangerous and noisy is it to live in New York, like in Queens or Brooklyn?

NY is waaaaay better than it used to be for a number of different reasons. In fact I don't think it's any more or less dangerous than Boston to be honest. I'm not a New Yorker, however, I do read the news and have read some articles on this.

Naturally there are some areas where it is not wise to tally.

Personally I would move to NY in a, well, New York minute.

I stayed with a friend in the LES for about 5 days last year and though it was relatively noisy, I slept soundly every night and the bustle was actually very nice to wake up to. It felt like the neighborhood had vitality and life. Public transportation is also super convenient. You don't even need a car, and probably shouldn't bother because parking is so expensive. NYC drivers are as INSANE as you've probably heard, but I *love* driving in that environment.

I never felt threatened in any of my visits to NYC.

Boston is also a great city, but I HATE driving in it, mostly due to the irritating road system of roundabouts, constant construction and magically disappearing lanes.

Personally I'd pick NYC over the two.

But I'm moving to LA instead!

Mugged everyday??!?! Who told you that?

I grew up in NYC and live in Boston now. I have never been mugged in NYC and I have lived in Brooklyn, Queens and went to school in Manhattan.

NYC is awesome! Lots of culture and great many things to do.

Boston is great too but on a smaller scale.

Haha, I don't think people get mugged everyday. I said that there are so many misconceptions about NYC and I'd rather get info from people who live there.

Let me give you my point of view... i grew up in portland oregon... lived in san diego, and arizona... also lived in nyc and know live in CT....

when you first come to nyc it is amazing and theres always something going on... truly one of the best places in the world.... BUT

to live here all the time it gets very old... it is loud and very dirty.. no you dont get mugged at all.. and very expensive to live nice otherwise you live kinda of slummy... rent is 2000-3000 month... min

nyc and east coast is night and day bettween west coast and cali... i grew up on the west coast.. lived here for a while know... things are newer and cleaner on the west coast... quality of life is just a little better and easier on the west coast...

I love nyc... but after living there i could never live there... so i moved to greenwhich ct.. which is about 15miles from nyc... and its a more of a suburb kinda of living like i was used too.. even people from the east coast will tell you NYC is a place to go visit not live... nyc will change you and most of the time not in a good way... living in ct... gives me the chance to go into to nyc.. for the day or weekend and have a chance to go home.. and escape the dirtiness and noise...

ya i live in nyc, been living here for a few months (just for the summer) although i've grown up outside the city and been in and out all my life.

like others said: noisy, dirty, expensive. if you are RICH you will live a comfortable life: otherwise, it's penny pinching basically all the time. doable, but tough. you have to be in high-energy gear to THRIVE. i think i'd freak out if i couldn't return to my parent's house in New Jersey every few weekends.

Mlost NYC is a safe place, at least that is my opinion based on 12 years of experience living here. And I lived in some of the worst neighborhoods you can imagine. Nothing ever happened to me.

Brooklyn vs Queens issue depends who you ask, people living in Queens will say it is better, ones from Brooklyn think Brooklyn is better. Both are the same thing I think. I am sure NYC would probably first seem noisy later you will adjust. I live in Brooklyn (Bay Ridge), it is a regular neighborhood, nothing special and not noisy at all.

If I had to pick locations to live in NYC, Park Slope, Bay Ridge or Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn, or Forest Heels, Manhasset or Bayside in Queens.

I think I could handle the dirty and expensive part of it. I wouldn't move out there unless I was able to bump up my pay substantially, which in the industry right now seems doable.

And I would be getting rid of my car. So I'd be saving over $600 a month on payments/insurance.

The high energy part has me worried a bit, actually. I love the city mentality, but I think living in So Cal suburbia has softened me up too much.

I haven't been to NYC in a while however when I think NYC I think food. The food there is great. When I was there I was actually impressed with how clean the streets were. Like... there wasn't a lot of trash on the ground. I always imagined it a lot dirtier. I had many encounters with homeless which sometimes can be scary. They will do anything to get money from you, in my experience. My brother dropped a bouncy ball into traffic by accident and our homeless friend dived into traffic to get it. It was loud. But I kinda liked it. Once a car alarm went off for three days, no joke. Parking is terrible. People double and triple park on the streets so if you get blocked in... you are stuck I guess! Obscenely expensive to live there even in the crappiest of apartments. I seriously thought the building we lived in should have been condemned. I felt like the staircase would fall apart every step I took. And as soon as you walked into our apartment the bathtub was directly to your left in the middle of the kitchen/living room. I only lived in the summer and never for the winter so I don't know how brutal the cold gets. But it was pretty hot. I was convinced that if we threw an egg from the window onto the pavement it would cook. I don't believe we had AC either. The pigeons did get pretty annoying, though....always around and lurking. Anyways... I loved it there regardless of how awkward the living situation got sometimes. But now I prolly wouldn't move back just because of the sole reason that it costs so much to live there.

Oh yeah and I lived in Manhattan btw!

  • 2 weeks later...

I grew up 20 min. outside of Manhattan in Northern NJ. Still live there now, but spend most of my weekends in the city.

NYC is an awesome place to be. You'll never run out of things to do, from bars, clubs, museums, parks, fairs, musicals/shows, concerts, restaurants, etc. You will never have nothing to do, or nowhere to go.

It's not as dangerous as you probably think. However, it would also depend on what neighborhoods you're hangin' around in. My b/f (born and raised in Manhattan) comments that there are quite a few cities in Jersey that are more dangerous than certain neighborhoods/areas in NYC. So it's all relative . . .

The people of the city are cool as hell. You'll find a mixture of tourists, especially depending on where you are, and there is not one culture/race/ethnicity that is not represented there. I love the diversity. People are very eclectic, too. Also, contrary to certain portrayals of New Yorkers, they can be quite friendly in a communal sense. When you're good to them, they're good to you.

I've been to Boston a few times, and love it there, too. It's a bit prettier looking than NYC, in my opinion, smaller, and the subway systems are moron-friendly (lol - just very easy to follow).

I agree ^

Bay Ridge, Bayside, good places to live especially if you want to have a family any time soon.
