Weight loss frustration..

Recommended Posts

Okay, So I started a healthy gradual diet the beginning of this month. I started around the time I got my period so I was bloated and weighed more. I gradually was loosing a pound or two the last two weeks. But it may have been from not being bloated anymore. I cut out all junk food and ate around 1600 calories a day along with walking alot. I usually have a fast metabolism and usually eat a lot more than 1600 calories. Sometimes I binge eat, now I eat small meals throughout the day and eat mostly fruits, grains, and veggies (Im vegan)....But suddenly my gradually weight loss seems to be going the other way around. I weigh myself every day and my weight was gradually going from 135 to 134 to 133 to 132 throughout the two weeks...Suddenly it is going back up to 133, and now 134...

Here is the strange part. Yesterday I ate a normal amount of food, around 1600 calories and walked about an hour. I must have ate something bad, because around midnight I got really sick and threw up all my dinner (a salad and some tofu with veggies)...I thought when I woke up I would be lighter, I figured something good would come out of such a crappy situation...But I weighed more! Does anyone know what going on? I know people would say only weigh yourself once a week, but I am used to seeing gradual weight loss every day, not gradual weight gain. And even if I weighed myself weekly, I would be very disappointed to see I gained two pounds this week..What gives?

I just reread what I wrote, and hope I didnt disgust anyone with the throw up part...Sorry!!

I am no expert in dieting whatsoever, but, if I were you, I would definitely do something a little more intensive than walking. I am a male, but whenever I feel myself "plumping up a little" I do a mini health week... This includes an hour or two of high caliber tennis every day followed by action packed and balanced meals. Hope it works out for you! Keep it up!!!

Thanks DL token....I know you are right about that....Whenever I do a diet where I try and jog and cut my calories any more, it ends up back fireing on me though. I get unmotivated to jog one week and then get frustrated with myself and eat too much and end up back where I started. I'm trying to make this a routine I know I can actually do, so that I can gradually loose weight without it being a total drag, and making it a lifestyle change that will last for good. I know I would loose a lot more weight if I jogged more and ate less, but I dont trust I could keep it up for good. WHat I dont understand is that I am cutting calores in half about, and I am getting more excersice than normal, and I even threw up last night, and I am gaining weight back? THat is whats frustrating...Is it water weight?

i would stop weighing yourself everyday ... when dieting that is the worst thing you can do because you will see your weight fluctuate and that will drive you insane.

I've recently lost over 100lbs.. and the best thing to do is weigh yourself on the same scale, once a week, with the same clothes on (or none at all) ..that will give you more accurate results.

and at your weight you might want to drop your cal intake down to 1200 cal per day...and take in less carbs and more proteins...

I would eat my carbs in the A.M. and have more protein throughout the day- i would also have my fruits and other "sugary" foods in the afternoon for a pick me up...

just some suggestions.

good luck =)

Thanks. Good suggestions....I dont know if I could keep up with 1200 Calories...I've tried and usually end up eating more..And even if I weighed myself weekly, Id still see I gained 2 pounds by this week...I am getting frustrtated. I do look like I lost a little thoough...My stomach is flatter...But I want to get to 125 and it just is not happening...Dont you think if I cut my calories to 1200, ang reached my goal, Id be more likely to put the weight back on than if I stayed at a gradual 1600 or so calories?

no because you would gradually put yourself back on a maintenance plan so you don't slow your metabolism.

are you drinking A LOT of water? that is the best thing for you.

I thought i would have a hard time going to 1200 cals ... and i just ate more filler foods... more fruits.. more veggies... its really the carbs you have to be careful with ...and carbs come in all shapes and sizes..some veggies like beans and fruits like oranges are also in the carb family.

one thing that really helped me when i was in the thick of my weight loss was eating almonds... they are an amazing source of protein and boy do they fill you up- but i would get the raw ones not the roasted with salt...

one thing that i would often do when i found i wasn't losing and at a stand still..is i would keep a food diary ..and then i would look up the calories and nutrients of the foods i was eating ...and there were times that i needed to adjust and take certain foods out of my diet because i didn't realize how many carbs and calories and fat were in them!!

the internet is a wonderful resource for dieters.

but you don't have that much weight to lose ... so its going to be a lot harder for you..

i know when i first started losing it was just falling right off me..and then the smaller i got ..the harder it became..

so just take it easy ... eat right... incorporate more cardio into your exercise routine....

also ... if you are walking more you "may" have built some muscle which could explain the weight increase.

You'll weigh differently at different times of the day.. your weight will change on depending on when you last went to the bathroom, what you ate, water retention etc... you will end up frustrated if you do weigh yourself several times a day =P There is no solution to that one except turning yourself into a metal robot.

haha..Mousty, I know... I have been reading up alot on weight loss and changes in the scale and water retention and weighing different throughout the day...But for some reason that doesnt keep me from wanting to check to see if I've lost anything....I've done it in the past and it actually worked. I weighed myself every morning at the same time naked, and the scale always gradually went down, even if for a day or two it stayed the same or was a little bit up...But this time it seemed like it was gradually going up way more than I have ever experienced..I guess I should just keep up what I am doing and see what happens in a month...Thanks...!

Maybe you are pregnant?

If not, then what you are experiencing is your body fighting back. When your body experiences any drastic change, like your diet, how much you consume, etc., your body tries to restablish its homeostasis.

By restricting your caloric intake all of sudden will decrease your normal metabolism rate because your body thinks your are starving yourself so it kicks in its natural instinct to slow everything down. So reduce your caloric intake slowly..if you were eating 2200 calories a day, try reducing it to 2000 for two weeks then 1800 the next two then down to 1600.

A lot of times, vegitarians don't consume enough protein to increase muscle mass thus making the weight loss process much longer. Increase in muscle mass helps burn more fat and increase the matobolic rate. So drink skim milk or other means of protein.

weight loss takes time, what you experienced was temporary loss of water. Weight loss should be a long process and should not be a quick one. If you do lose wieght quickly then the likelihood of you gaining that back plus some is very high.

Make sure to incorporate exercise into your daily life. Walking is great but your body adapts pretty quickly and walking will no longer be enough resistance to continue to caloric burning process. Lifting weights is the best way.

Don't focus on how much you weigh but on how you look and fit into cloth.
