Ok, first let me say that I am 19 years old, a college student with a 3.3 GPA, and who always get his work done and always take care of business. I have a friend who lives in another state and hes suspose to come to my town for a visit. Now I am suspose to pick him up from the airport and he is a big Star Trek fan. (I mean huge). So I thougt I would have some fun and hold up a sign that says "William Shatner do have a life!*" (Hes a big William Shatner fan) Anyways the plans are already made and my mom (who knew about it ahead of time, I told her, and she OK'd it!) Anyways she caught me making the sign tonight and got all pissed off. Now shes acting all Paranoid (I should mention that I have met my friend several time before, and we have hung out together before), she thinks that hes going to adudcted me and etc etc, ya know the typical hystrical mother senerio. How can I tell her that its time to cut the cord. I am 19 for God's sake! Its time she let me have my freedom and let me live my life the way I want to!

you can't be mad at your mom for acting this way. she cares abotu you & she's only looking out for you. she's your mother no matter how old you are, she's supposed to act this way & be protective of you, she just doesn't want anything to happen to you. even if you know that nothing is going to happen, she doesn't know that & being a parent, she will worry. just continue to let your mom know that you trust this guy & he is your friend. if she still won't let you go, you could always take a friend with you. your mom might feel better about that.

My mom was just like that when I was about 16 years old. She was always in my business and so on. When I turned 17 it all changed. She no longer calls my cell phone and let's me go out when ever I want to. I'm not sure when did she made did change but it just happen. Look I'm sure that your mom will stop annoying you and acting this way sooner or later.

I believe most hysterical mothers do remain hysterical all their lives. If Dude's mom changed jovernight, he was plain lucky.

 

My mom is hysterical too and I am 27 yrs old (even though my profile says 34 automatically). She just had a hystery crisis today and even though she lives in another city, it still affects me. She had a hysterical crisis because I forgot to pay my phone bill and since there were TONS of long-distance charges from calling her (my sister just left home). And she has been really terrible and debasing.

 

All I can tell you is that she wants the best for you. However, she does not understand that she is trespassing your constitutional freedoms. She has no respect for you. Preventing you from taking that sign is trespass, because you are free to do as you want as long as you are not hurting others. Parents have the duty until you are 18 to prevent you to hurt yourself. But taking that sign is inoffensive.

 

Just remember that she is probably acting that way because she was treated in the same way by her parents, with no respect. She is used to yelling and manipulating and that may be counterproductive for you. I know that in my life experience, when I was at home I displayed rather self-destructive behaviour. I was doing poorly in school and in every aspect of my life. Only when I left home and went to college, every thing went much better for me. Her problems were reflecting in my life!
