15 Storeys High
Just a little wondering, especially for those with kids..... How much do you know about dealing with medical emergencies? Would you be able to start resucitation if you needed to? Link to comment
Mavh25
Fair bit, mainly due to my sisters illness I've done quite a bit of training. Nothing over the top though..... Just general first aid, resuss and recovery position etc... What do you do for a living 15? are you in the medical profession? Link to comment
capbit
I helped my mother with her illness for a few years so I know a little bit, but nothing special. I think the general public should be educated on CPR and whatnot, maybe even those ECG machines that can be for home use. Link to comment

Angel_baby
My husband is a nurses aide so he went through CPR classes and all that fun stuff. A few years back I went through the classes. Growing up I had to take care of my little sister that had seizures all the time. I had a medical emergency with my 2 year old when he was almost a year old. He started running a temperature out of nowhere and it sky rocketed before I knew it. He had a seizure and quit breathing. Link to comment
ghost69
yes. i was in EMT class. so i'm prepared. Link to comment

lolt
I was a nanny for several years. When the second child was born both parents and myself took an infant CPR class at a health club. I feel confident that I know what to do when there is a medical emergency, I have been through a few of them. I think that it is important for all parents to take CPR and a general first aide class. While there is only so much we can do for a child at home in an emergency situation, if we can stabilize the situation it will make it easier to take the child to the hospital. Link to comment
RelaxByWater84
I don't know a thing about CPR or resucitation(sp?). I had a health class in high school that was using an out-of-date method of CPR. My EMT friend told us not to learn it. I didn't of course. I would like to take classes that would teach me those things. The problem is that I didn't do well in science or math. I struggled in biology and still don't understand it. Link to comment
ghost69
why did your emt friend tell you not to learn it? cpr is very easy. saving someone because of the basics if very simple. you don't have to be well versed in biology or math. Link to comment

She told us that because that date of CPR was dangerous. She went into an explanation which I could not understand. She was very good with her job so I just took her word for it. Anything that would include me having someone's life in the balance scares me a little. Although I would know how to put direct pressure on a wound and what would make a tourniquet(sp?). 15 Storeys High
Yeah, I find it a little odd too. The basic concept is as it's always been. It's only the ratio of rescue breaths to compressions that really changes. It's now 30:2 with no initial rescue breaths for an adult and 15:2 for children. The emphasis is all on decent compressions for bystander cpr nowadays. Link to comment
Red Fox
I have a current First Aid at Work Certificate (UK) and am one of the nominated First Aiders at my workplace. I've done first aid courses on and off for over 10 years..ish. I feel it's useful to have a basic idea of some skills just in case, however I have only very very rarely had to use any first aid. I am fairly sure that odds are I will never in my life have to carry out CPR but I think it's still useful just in case. Also you'll most likely use skills like dealing with burns and cuts - lots of people get minor cuts and burns every so often. Especially me, because I'm fairly clumsy especially around the oven! By law you only have to refresh your certificate once every 3 years - which seems a shame because after the course is over I never practice CPR or things like that until my refresher course.. there should be a bit less time between courses I think so it's easier to remember. I wanted to be a paramedic for quite a long time - gave that idea up ages ago, I don't think I'd be that suited to the job. 15 Storeys.. what's an ECP? Link to comment
15 Storeys High
ECP - Emergency Care Practitioner. Basically a paramedic combined with a nurse practitioner, with extended skills. Link to comment
ghost69
this is just about the same for any certification though. even in the computer industry. every 2-3 years have to renew certification. but cpr is critical. i think a refresher is needed. granted you are in the workforce, so yes, this probably won't ever have to be used by you. but somebody in the medical field would be using this constantly and they need to be on top of this. I was personally wanting a more frequent update - having to do a refresher MORE than just once every 3 years. OK so I am likely to never use it but if I do I'd like to have practised it recently rather than nearly 3 years ago...People in a medical field do it more often I'd imagine (ooo-er lol) because they would be using it constantly. I think the difference is if I have a computer qualification for example and I forget a bit I can look it up as I come to the problem - which is fine, but not so fine if what you are looking up is what do in a serious medical emergency.
