Acne treatment

Hey guys so I'm 17 and a guy. The last few years I've kinda been dealing with a little ance but nothing too bad at all. About 7 or 8 months ago it got worse and pretty consistantly there has been pipples on the sides of my face and a few under my mouth and stuff. still it's not the worst I've seen, but I'd like to have cleaner skin. Right now I'm using Clearasil Ultra Daily Face wash (which definitely helps keep it under control, but it's still around) What other products could I buy at a supermarket or something (no prescriptions) that would help in addition to the face wash that I'm using now? I'd like something that's not too expensive and that will really help my skin. suggestions?

Actually I have used proactive before cuz my brother had really bad acne and had some left over when he left for college. But that all ran out and after that my acne started showing up more. Right now I just can't convince my parents to get me proactive because of the money. What about stuff you can buy at a rightaid or walgreens?

What worked for me was two things - the pill (don't recommend it... unless you've always wanted breasts hehe) BUT I also use Panoxyl Aqua/AcneGel - the active ingredient in it is Benzoyl Peroxide which is pretty effective on acne. I started with 2.5%, usually when you want to use 5% or 10% you should see a dermatologist first, but I accidentally bought some 5% after having used 2.5% after a while and it worked even better, I'd recommend starting at the lowest though. I rarely get pimples nowadays, sometimes I go months on end without a blemish.

A couple of things to watch out for:

1) It must be fragrance free (i.e. no 'parfum' or 'fragrance') - once I ran out of my usual stuff and they didn't have it at the pharmacy so I bought a different brand - BIG MISTAKE, I swear I went from clear skinned to looking like an english fruitcake in a few short days, luckily I realised why.

2) it can dry out your skin, but it's okay to apply moisturizer when you have it on. Also it can turn your skin a little red at first and takes a few weeks to begin working but STICK TO IT. Even if it doesn't make the acne go away, it'll reduce it.

Anything stronger than that I can only recommend seeing a dermatologist. A friend of mine had very bad acne and within a few months of getting his prescription, he was pretty much acne free.

Good luck, I know how distressing it can be to not have flawless skin. You're still lovely on the inside though, don't forget that

Hey there,

I feel what you are going through. I am a 26 yr old and all of a sudden I got the worst acne. I went to see a dermotologist and she put me on Minocycline tablets. I take one in the morning and one at night. It has been about 6 weeks and it is already making a huge difference. I still have a few small red spots, but nothing compared to how it looked at Christmas.

I would suggest going to see a dermatologist. They will review your acne recommend what to go on.

Good luck!

Oh and Pocket Rocket is correct regarding Benzoyl Peroxide. I also use a cream with this ingrediant in it which I apply on at night.

alright, I went to a dermatologist a while ago and they told me to go get this rediculously expensive prescriptions. seriously like 1 or 2 hundred dollars. I'm looking for products I can buy at a supermarket or pharmacy. My acne really isn't terrible, but it's still there.

Seriously, products containing Benzoyl peroxide (you don't need prescription), give it a go, but don't expect miracles overnight

i used proactiv and it worked for a while but overtime it can actually cause more of a break out. I used to use Clearasil and had the same effect. The most inexpensive and probably better working solutions i have purchased would have to be Noxema Deep Lathering face wash. its like 3 or 4 dollars and it works awesome with my skin.

Hey, I used to have TERRIBLE acne until a few years back. Just be reassured that it definitely eases towards the end of your teens. Im 20 now, and dont have to use any treatments.

The most successful one I had back in the day was an antibiotic called Minocin. GP's can prescribe it. The most powerful treatment is another antibiotic called Ruacutane(sp?). GP's can also dish this out, but often as a last resort, due to its side effects. It usually clears most of the acne up completely tho.

In my experience, over the counter remedies only work on those with next to no spots.

But chin up, it will eventually clear up on its own!

Ah you beat me to it. Roaccutane. I was on this (I had majorly bad acne, breaking out like, every second day) and now, 3.5 years later, I haven't had a zit for 3.5 years! It is amazing stuff. It may be expensive, and it's not over the counter, but I highly reccomend this, even with all the side effects. It is well worth it in the end

I have to disagree with this statement. Not all acne clears up on it's own.

You might find this suggestion off the wall but you should try Head and Shoulders dandruff shampoo. It contains zinc. I used it after I had my baby. My hormones were all out of whack, but I never had a problem with breakouts after using it! I actually found this idea by searching online. Many swear by it so it's definitely worth a try!

I was going to suggest that you take some vitamins for your skin. There's a company called Genuine Health that sells a supplement called Perfect Skin. It contains: fish oil, green tea extract, zinc, vitamin E. All are suppose to help clear skin. Another supplement to consider is flaxseed oil.

Im on Roaccutane at the moment, and im only on half dose at the moment to get used to it, going on to double dose next week. So far its took all the pain, redness away. Half of it has gone. Its a miracle cure. Only thing is i cant drink because it messes with your liver and blood fats so you have to have blood tests. I stupidly had a drink, just one, and had baddd stomach cramps all night.

So if you want to go straight edge, and if its serious enough, roaccutane may be the way my friend.
