dapar321
I feel as if I am wasting my time. During the week, I go to school (senior in HS), I work, and I play in a band. But when I am not doing these things, I am: A: Practicing Bass B: Playing video games I feel guilty when im playing video games. I feel like my life is being wasted, but at the same time I know that I am doing okay because I work and I play in a band. Anyone else feel like this? As soon as I sit down, I feel like my life is a waste until I get up and go to school the next day. On weekends I do nothing except A and B, and occasionally I will hang out with friends, depending on if they can or not. Is this normal, and is this okay? Link to comment
musicguy
I think it's fine. You're honing your bass skills for one thing. The more you practice, the better you become. The band I work with doesn't always rock out school or work, I always see them playing video games. Sometimes you have to relax and chill out for a bit Link to comment
ilovepoemsalot
I don't see how you could be wasting your time if you're enjoying yourself. If you're talking about being productive, well, you already go to school and have to be there doing boring stuff for many hours each day, I think that's more than enough. I don't see what's so important about being 'productive' anyway, and there's absolutley no reason for why you should feel guilty for doing things you enjoy, as long as they aren't causing any harm to anyone. livinginsbi
OK - this is a mom talking. *You are in school - Excellent! *You have a Job - Excellent! Do you make decent grades and try your best? Are you a good all around person? Are you respectful? Enjoy being a kid while you can - you'll have plenty of time to worry about your productivity! I still play video games, about 3-4 hours a week - more when my 'adult' life lets me. I know a surgeon who attributes his great hand-eye coordination to playing nintendo! I'm sure there are lots of other people in other occupations who can say the same! Link to comment
Nurseman
What? You haven't cured cancer YET? Hang in there. You're doing just fine. Link to comment
Henri
I feel the same way, that's why recently, I've decided to cut down on the amount of time I spend playing video games, and started to read more. But that doesn't mean it's anything to be ashamed of or worry about; anything that's enjoyable, and doesn't come at the expensive of other important things. Link to comment

Yes, I'm a neuroscientist, and I have been known to play the odd video game still (when my other half lets me!), and I certainly played a good few in my younger days. Lack of productivity can always make you feel guilty, but life isn't just about how much you can do, it's also about enjoying yourself. As is often said: nobody dies wishing they'd spent more time at the office. Link to comment
musicguy
video games help a musician. I know it helps drummers a lot with hand/eye coordination Link to comment
Blockhead1013
Definitely don't feel guilty Depar... I'm the exact same way, except I don't even have an instrument to play (I've really been cracking down on trying to find a good electric guitar to start learning how to play). Just school, work (2 or 3 days a week), and going to the gym... video games in spare time, nothing else for me. Good to know somebody out there feels the same Link to comment
melrich
I feel guilty when im playing video games. I feel like my life is being wasted, How much time are you spending on them? It's a pretty good indication that it is too much when you start asking questions like this. Link to comment
Prufrock06
Totally agree with everyone else! I can also sympathize with occasional feelings of unproductivity as well. You've got your schoolwork, you've got your band -- that's a lot for someone to have on their plate, especially being a senior in high school. I assume you are going off to college next year? So don't fret too much about taking time out to enjoy yourself or relax -- once you graduate, there will be so many exciting opportunities awaiting you that you will wish for the time when you could just go to school, practice in your band, and veg out in front of the television!
