Zona76
Depression is a combination of thoughts that bring on feelings. Usually bad. Have you read the book The Secret? You should. It's about taking POSITIVE actions. Thinking positively makes you happy. Thinking negatively makes you feel bad and even ill. You have to train your mind to block negativity from coming in. The best way is to do the opposite. When you think good thoughts you project good energy. it bounces off what you send and returns back to you. Think happy. Shoo away the bad stuff. If it's too hard to not think of your present problems, concentrate on something in your life that gave you a good feeling. Be a dreamer. Use your wild imagination. Focus and meditate if you can. Even awake take something pure and clean like a leaf or a tree. It's pure clean energy. Breath it in. Suck the air into your body and feel the good. Send the good out with each exhale and breath more of the good air in. You can learn to block the bad thoughts. Yes I am from the generation they called the flower children.:scatter: My husband calls me scaterbrained... But I'm happy and that's all I care about. Link to comment

CarnelianButterfly
It depends on the type of depression. If its from emotional issues, therapy without medication could work. But if the depression is due to a chemical imbalance medication is the best option. Try therapy and no medication, see if it helps. Link to comment
lizer
i also beat it, without medication. and its 100% about controlling your thought process. its about being grateful, thankful, finding the good, not allowing negativity into your life. its hard. in fact, sometimes you have to really really force yourself to 'be happy'.. you have to force positive thoughts. but eventually, it becomes habit. eventually you will find the joy in life quite easily and you can dwell in that wonderfully rich place. i will have episodes sometimes where i will feel cut off from the world, and just feel hopeless..and nights where i will cry out of nowhere.. but thats not the norm.... and even on those nights, its when ive allowed those negative thoughts to take hold and steer me out of control. i would also love to acknowledge gods place in all of this. im not sure what your beliefs are but if you give your burdens over to god, and believe in him, and let him handle your problems, you will find relief. i encourage you to get involved with a local church. or volunteer. most of the time we get caught in a bad cycle of feeling bad for ourselves, secluding ourselves, and then it continues on and on... you've got to go out and serve other people. help those in need. keep your mind busy with GOOD things. AngelEyez
When I had severe depression and felt suicidal I was going to a psychologist very often. I can't say she helped much. Then I was put on medication...which made me a bit more psychotic...and made me gain 5 LBs. The pills also made me tired and attempt overdose. My depression varies. Last week I was very depressed, but now I'm trying to stay positive about everything. Exercising (especially yoga) helps me feel happier about myself. You have to start forcing yourself to do things you enjoy. Watch comedy movies. Go dancing. Listen to upbeat music if you're about to cry. Do you have a pet? My dog always makes me happy, so whenever I'm sad, I just go hug him...and he always makes me smile. Link to comment
Belgian girl
thank you both too but I also feel very tired and often pain and activity makes me tired sooner than before so I have to reduce a lot of things in life that I used to enjoy, which makes it harder to stay optimistic Link to comment

Belgian girl
You should consider using nutrition and exercise to increase your energy levels. Look into omega-3 specifically. If I'm not mistaken omega-3 is (also) good for brainfunctioning, didn't heard (as far as I remember though about the advantage you are mentioning so thanks, I will try to reach my daily portion Link to comment

k8s
Exercise is commonly prescribed prior to medication by many doctors here in Australia. Make sure your Vitamin B levels are up (esp B12) as if it is deficient it can aid depression, all berries cotain a natural antioxidant that make you happy, also very effective is evening primrose oil and another vitamin supplement that escapes my mind. I even suggest exercise twice a day - when I go to the gym twice a day I always feel amazingly happy so maybe try a run or walk twice a day? But yourself small things you like flowers nice candes etc treat yourself and eat well it makes you feel better - good luck! Link to comment
BeStrongBeHappy
When you are depressed, you are also stressed, and it is easy to get a chemical imbalance. So the trick is to try to re-adjust the balance, which can be done several ways. First, take vitamins every day, especially what are called 'Stress' vitamins (to deal with stress). You can find some named that, or look for a good multivitamin that has B vitamins and C. Also take a calcium/magnesium/zinc vitamin since women need more of that. Next, try walking. Start with a short walk, and add more each day until you are walking 20 minutes to an hour per day. If you are bored, ask a friend to come, or go somewhere where walking is pleasant, like a park, or a shopping mall, or museum, or in the country. Do you find yourself more depressed in winter months? you might have seasonal affective disorder, which is caused by the brain not getting enough light in winter. that can be fixed by walking outside (extra light), or purchasing strong lights to read by... Get out and get as much natural sunlight as you can during the day. For some reason too, some people are depressed due to an out of sync sleep cycle. they are not sure why, but sometimes if a person forces themselves to stay up all one night (no sleep at all that one night) and goes to bed normal time the next night, the body resyncs the biological clock. But no cheating with even a small nap that one night or it doesn't work. Another help to break the obsessive thoughts that come with depression is to focus on things that bring you out of it. Try making a list of 100 things you've always wanted to do, and start working on them, one by one. It will get you up and doing, and help get the exercise and sunlight you need to reset brain chemistry. but if you are having serious suicidal thoughts, please try the medication immediately, and if your other methods don't work, then you should consider the medication. you really do want to feel better and enjoy your life, and that should be your priority, above anything else, to get yourself back to that, whatever it takes. Also recognize that even if something is working, it takes about a month to adjust your brain chemistry, so keep at it a while, and you will notice yourself feeling better one day. everyone should live with hope and happiness, so please fight for yourself and your happiness!
