sarey
How long does it take for an overdose to enter your system? Don't worry, I'm not gonna overdose. I'm curious because my friend has just rang me and said he has overdosed a few minutes ago, and I'm wondering how long it takes for an overdose to enter your system, he won't pick up my calls and I'm worried ... CarnelianButterfly
Depends on how its taken. Orally it can take a while, IV is within seconds to minutes. Link to comment
southerngirl
Okay, well ring for an ambulance because if that is true he may need your help. He reached out to you and told you about it. I had a friend that overdosed on something once and it was me that saved her. Link to comment
CarnelianButterfly
Definitely call for an ambulance. Link to comment
rocio
why do you want to know how long it takes? Link to comment
Shiranai
How much was taken? What was taken? How much pain is he in? If he lives close enough he should drink some milk, and you can rush over and drive him to the hospital yourself, you'll save him 1000 dollars US and he'll thank you for your quick thinking. Ambulance is not always the best choice. (2 way traffic, EMT fees, etc, etc, etc.) Link to comment
evania
How the hell can people be worried about fees whens someone's life could be in danger?! I will NEVER understand that! Link to comment
Jeen
sarey Did he phone again. It depend mostly on what he took and the amount, was it prescription meds or a legal drug or a illegal drug, it also depend on body mass and age. Link to comment
Jeen
he won't pick up my calls and I'm worried ... sarey Do you have a friend that stay close to him that can go over to his house to see why he don't answer his phone. Link to comment
southerngirl
Sarey, I hope you update us because I would like to know how your friend is doing and what you did after that. In cases like this, with your age (15) this would be a time when its OKAY to tell on a friend. Go to your parents or their parents or even someone else's parents. Sometimes telling on someone is just what they need. Link to comment
JadedStar
Anytime someone tells you they just took an overdose you should call an ambulance. If you find out later they exaggerated then maybe they will think twice about doing that in the future. If they didn't exaggerate you might save their life. I also agree with SG TELL your parents or his! Link to comment
sarey
He called me back and I talked to him for a bit he said he overdosed on paracetamol and a bunch of other liquid medications... I told him to go to hospital, but he wouldn't, so I called his mum up on her mobile and told her, and I don't know what's happened since... I wanted to know because I needed to know if making himself sick would help at all... Link to comment
southerngirl
I am glad you called his mother sarey, that was the right thing to do. Sometimes making himself sick could help but in that situation his mother did need to know. Way to go! You are a good friend! Link to comment

southerngirl
I know it feels that way, but sometime the right thing to do isn't easy. I will tell you a story about a friend I have. Shes a great friend, Ive known her now for 16 years. She had been doing drugs with some other friends. I was not there when she did this. I came up on the situation. To make a long story short, she was overdosing on something and laying on the floor in a seizure. These so called friends were standing around looking stupid and not doing anything for her. I took her and told them that they could help or not but I was going to help her. I dragged her to my car while she bit and scratched me. It hurt. I put her in the back seat where she promptly threw up all over the place and she was losing consciousness. I drove full speed to her parents house. I was only 16, I didn't know what to do. They called an ambulance. Her stomach had to be pumped and she actually needed serious medical treatment right there in her driveway at her house or she would have died. I saved her life. I could have ignored her... I could have been cool like the other people there. I could have worried about what her mother would have thought because none of them should have been doing drugs. I didn't though. Sometimes you just got to do whats right and hell with the consequences. If he really did overdose you may have saved his life. If he didn't, then his mother now knows how serious a situation she is dealing with. Lets all hope she gets him help so that he doesn't try this again. Life is too precious. Link to comment

He called you after he had done it anyways, that looks like a cry for help if you ask me. He knew you'd call for help. If he hadn't wanted to be found he wouldn't have been. Link to comment
Shiranai
Everytime my mother has heart attacks someone drives her to the hospital. When I have tough times breathing and need oxygen pumped into my lungs, I was driven to hospitals as well. The only 4 times my family used ambulances are as following: 1. My mother's first heart attack. 2. My car accident. 3. One of my sister's retarded friends called an ambulance for her when she passed out from menstrual cramps. He will not be thanked, that $1000 would be better spent as a donation to the children's hospital. 4. My father's stroke. When you can get somewhere yourself no slower than an ambulance or in reasonable time that the patient won't suffer more damage, what's wrong with relying on yourself? The emergency staff should be used for emergencies. The ambulance should be reserved for special cases that need immediate medical response. If there's not much EMT could do for someone, I always opt to drive. How someone can live a day without thinking about costs is what I don't understand. Everytime you call out an ambulance it's $1000 dollars, if you're not footing the bill, then it shouldn't be called out recklessly. I'm glad it turned out okay for the OP. Link to comment
HappyAsALark
Last time I checked that back seat of your car did not have heart monitors or lung pumps or iv's though...Those moments being driven to the hospital especially in the case of a heart attack or stroke could be moments where they are needing special medical attention on the way, which to me is worth a billion dollars if that is what it cost. So no, thinking about costs during an emergency life or death situation, seems a little bit greedy to me. Link to comment
southerngirl
Shiranai ----- If a friend were to tell me that they had just overdosed I would for sure call an ambulance and that is just what I would do. If I had a friend, like your mother that passed out before me on the floor and I knew she had prior heart attacks, like this case I would call for help. Period. You should thank your mothers friend because had it been a different situation causing her to pass out she could be gone now. Link to comment
Shiranai
It's not greedy. I just think the majority of the people in America are overly dramatic when it comes to emergencies. Somethings are not worth panicking over. Something as simple as driving a person to the hospital as soon as possible is not worth calling an ambulance over. Ambulances should be reserved for absolute emergencies, not petty medical situations. It's my sister's friend that called the ambulance. She yelled at him soon after, and I hope he will not act on stupidity again in the future. An ambulance was not necessary. In the case of an overdose, if an ambulance is called, the ambulance will not be able to do much other than sending the person to a hospital ASAP. If a friend or a family member can drive the person to the hospital ASAP, the effects would be the same. In the case of a mild overdose (which is why I asked the OP to ask her friend those questions), it's not necessary to call an ambulance at all. But, I can't convince the melodramatic, so I won't reply to this post again. Link to comment
wiser
It's not greedy. I just think the majority of the people in America are overly dramatic when it comes to emergencies. . Very true. Excellent point. Somethings are not worth panicking over. . Again, another great point. Something as simple as driving a person to the hospital as soon as possible is not worth calling an ambulance over. Ambulances should be reserved for absolute emergencies, not petty medical situations. You should have quit while you were ahead. A drug overdose is a life threatening medical emergency and definitely calls for an ambulance, which will get the person into treatment much faster than a car ride to the hospital. Link to comment

She was overdosing on drugs and would have DIED had they not pumped her stomach and also restarted her heart with those metal plates.... They did this in her driveway before ever leaving her house to take her to the hospital. Okay Im not big on technical terms however, you should be careful in giving out medical advice if you yourself are not a medical expert...... There is always something they can do, more than you could driving in your car. Link to comment

In the case of a mild overdose (which is why I asked the OP to ask her friend those questions), it's not necessary to call an ambulance at all. That is completely inaccurate. An ambulance is dispatched with paramedics who are trained medical professionals. They can begin medical treatment immediately at the scene and have advanced life support equipment and drugs at their disposal. You do not have any of this in a car. Link to comment
