rocio
I'm freakishly clumsy. I bump into things several times a day. My shins are always lines with bruises. I have boney hipbones and am constantly misjudging the width of doorways and wacking myself to the point where both sides of my hipbones are usually bruised up. I know this sounds like a joke but I'm serious. I'm constantly stubbing toes and wacking elbows. It's also embarrassing out in public because I'm always walking into stuff. Anyone know why I might be this way? Link to comment
shygirl23
I'm the same way, haha. If you figure it out, let me know! Sometimes I blame it on being left-handed though... And having to live in a world that wasn't made for me. Mostly though, I've just decided that I'm unlucky--plain and simple. Maybe not enough exercise or fine motor skills training when I was a child? CarnelianButterfly
I have the same problem, I have bruises at the height of all the tables and door knobs in the house. I'm not sure why, I used to be very balanced and more aware, I did ice skating and ballet and was good at both. I started getting migraines and I think they might have effected my inner ear, my balance sucks. I do yoga to try to get some semblance of my previous balance, it helps, but I still have trouble. I don't even want to think what I'd be like on the ice. Link to comment
capbit
Sometimes. I can walk into walls and step on things that are right in front of me. I feel it happens less if im more active. Link to comment
renaissancewoman101
Have you gone to see a doctor about it? You may have problems with your balance/equilibrium that can be associated with inner ear issues. Link to comment
Hope75
Eh, I'm convinced it's genetic. I'm very clumsy and my mom is the same way, as is are my sisters. Link to comment

rocio
I'm surprised by all the responses. Good to know I'm not the only one. Could it be that you are either A. In a hurry all the time? No, I'm more of a stop-and-smell-the-roses kind of person, or B. Not paying attention to your surroundings? Definitely. I spend alot of time in lala land. Me not walk around wall. Me walk thru wall. lol! As a couple of you mentioned, I also thought it might be inner ear issues. I'll sometimes also stumble over a bit - as if I was drunk. Link to comment
Entropy Smith
If you are serious in overcoming your dilemma... 1)take a dance class 2) learn geometry/physics and how they apply to body mechanics and then learn to take the proper angles on negotiating around things (a complex undertaking but one which i did since its job related) Link to comment
Entropy Smith
You know its not enough to just move around...one should strive to move with grace...economy of motion... Link to comment
shygirl23
I used to take ballet lessons... Back when I was about 7-8. Perhaps I shouldn't have stopped... Hee hee. =) Link to comment
rocio
If you are serious in overcoming your dilemma... 1)take a dance class I do bellydancing in my living room. Does that count? 2) learn geometry/physics and how they apply to body mechanics and then learn to take the proper angles on negotiating around things (a complex undertaking but one which i did since its job related) I'd actually been thinking of going back to school and getting a degree in physics. Now I have a practical reason for doing so. Sweet. Link to comment
Entropy Smith
I would say certainly belly dancing counts. Just start upping your awareness of what muscles are moving and how they move...physics is worth going back to school for...remember...lose your center of gravity...you lose your balance...lose your balance...you are done. edit: you can google the word "proprioception" for a possible starting point torwards your journy of movement awareness. mikeyy01
martial arts helps with ballence and you become aware of your surroundings. I sugest ju-jitsue Link to comment
evania
I was doing this all the time to (and still do to some extent, you should see my shins) but I found out it was from allergies. I was so used my head being congested that I never noticed it, I thought what I was feeling was normal. All of the congestion was throwing off my equilibrium. I now take allergy meds and my balance is much better. Link to comment
Atticus90
I get that way sometimes. It's not inner ear thing though. it's just me not paying attention lol Link to comment
RayKay
I am fine with my balance and my surroundings (I am sure yoga and overall body awareness helps!) but I AM freakishly clumsy. Some examples (of many!): 1. I was in shower and had the shampoo poured in one hand, bottle in other - had a snap lid...went to close it on my hip bone and it pinched shut on my skin (ow). Bad enough but when I went to show my boyfriend how I did it a week later....I DID IT AGAIN. 2. I was riding my bike trainer a couple winters ago. My mum phoned so I was talking to her and just spinning...went to adjust the fan so it was not blowing into the phone - reached over, finger (I have little fingers) slipped through the cage and I cut off the tip....of course I did not want to feel like an idiot so I just kept talking to my mum and after I hung up I yelped...LOL. 3. Last winter I was on the treadmill. Just totally lost focus for some reason and tripped over my own feet, flew off the back but there were boxes not too far behind the treadmill so they trapped my leg between them and the tread which took about two layers of skin off my entire shin. I was just happy I did not hit my head and go unconscious - that would of been an interesting CSI episode! I bruise easily too though, so when I do bang something, I look like I have been beaten. You should see me during mountain biking season! Anything that requires body awareness and spatial awareness can be great for your balance/awareness of surroundings. Dancing, yoga, martial arts, capoeira (I think I spelt that wrong!).....and make a point to walk in the MIDDLE of doorways. Link to comment
Parsley
I think some people are just made to be clumsy - I'm bad enough, when I was in primary school I'd come home and show my nan what injuries I had incurred that day! But my boyfriend...whoa. He's quite tall and just always manages to bang into everything. A little while ago he stood up, bashed into a chair, turned round bashed into the wardrobe turned again and fell into me. It was just like a cartoon. I'm sorry to say I missed this, but he went ice skating with some of our friends and they said it was like a giraffe taking its first steps! lol I think if none of the (very helpful!) suggestions people have given so far come to any fruition, you may just be like myself and my boyfriend, naturally clumsy, and maybe invest in cushions for tables and doorhandles? I usually bang into corners of furniture and end up with bruised legs. I fell outside the other day for no good reason, after twisting my ankle on nothing. I drop & spill things a lot too. I don't know why I'm clumsy, if you can figure it out let me know!!!!! (Sometimes I think it's because I'm always in a rush??????) Link to comment

Sounds like you do what I do...rushing and making good time. That is my motto "gotta make good time" lol what's a few bruises if it all gets done quickly? ROFL Link to comment
