servedcold
Every woman I date makes a deal of the fact I wear "tank" style undershirts, aka "wifebeaters"... 1. Ladies, do you have a wifebeater stigma, if so why? Do any of you -prefer- wifebeaters? 2. Does the fact that a man wears wifebeaters lower your attraction towards him provided he looks good otherwise? Thanks for any replies, this has always puzzled me. Link to comment
Dating Coach
I'm thinking it's personal taste. If you like em, who cares, right? Link to comment
JadedStar
I think perhaps some women view them as undershirts and think it looks disheveled to wear them as outerwear> I would assume that is part of the reason. Just find women who don't care. I think in the proper place they might be okay but they seem more like undershirts to me. That is assumign that you mean you do wear them as outerwear. Link to comment
pinkelephant
i love a hot guy in a wifebeater and sweats. Mmm! LOL. But yeah, thats only in the gym or at home. Don't go out like that!! Link to comment
WTHUWY
On the right guy they're hot. I wear them alot. Just depends on what my style is that day. Link to comment
JadedStar
I think you might also find this is an age thing. I think younger women might like it more than those over 30. JUst a guess if i had to guess. Link to comment

servedcold
OK to clarify, past GFs couldn't stand me wearing them UNDER other clothing, they claim they can see it under my shirt. And they hate me wearing them around the house, so around the house I usually accommodate by wearing a regular t-shirt, as I prefer anyway. The women in question are my last three GFs and several female friends. Jaded may be onto something, the 46 y.o. absolutely despised them and made a huge deal of them, the 39 y.o. was only mildly disgusted, and the current 32 y.o. has made only passing comments. DC, no worries, I will always wear them as underwear, won't be changing that. The reason I started the thread is because have just always wondered about the revulsion in certain women. It's just a tank top t-shirt for cryin out loud. Link to comment
itsallgrand
haha. I admit: wifebeaters are a strong symbol to me. I've actually seen people wear em for all the wrong reasons - wife beating in a wifebeater, isn't just a thing on tv! But it is really about what it can represent. You are a-ok (in my books) to wear one if: (and this isn't to be taken real seriously lol) -you are reasonably fit (not a keg sized beer belly, is all!) and clean -you do not have so many tats it's hard to find skin, or the tats look like they were done with a pen attached to some home-made device in a back alley somewhere/jail/while on serious drugs -you do not wear an excess of tacky, horrible jewelry lol -you are not a drug dealer, gangsta wannabe (or gangster), pimp, thug, obvious alcoholic etc... -you don't wear one on a rundown bicycle/motorcycle/vehicle that is specifically played with to get that extra fumes and Rorrrorrrrr sound (muffler? god help me) -you respect the usual boundaries of when/where to wear clothes -you do not 'accessorize' with dark sunglasses So strange, but yeah. Basically if you look reasonably clean cut and present yourself as normal, it's ok. But it can easily come accross sleazy or homeless, is all. Link to comment
ghost69
i used to wear those back in the day. i wear actual tank tops now. just to the gym or to run to the store or on the beach. nothing to go out in and impress. Link to comment
beauty21
I always thought it was "white beaters", not "wife beaters". Either way, I wear them, too. I have absolutely no problem with them and whoever does, sucks. Link to comment
JadedStar
I am 41 but would have no aversion to a man wearing them under his clothes. For some reason tho the image of a disheveled heavy man in need of a shave wearing one entered my head and that would be a big NO NO NO. LOL I am sure that doesn't describe you my dear servedcold! rms8
I don't have a strong opinion on them either way. They're usually just undershirts. What does annoy me a little is when people freak out about calling them "wife beaters". Apparently now it's not PC to say that... who knows? Link to comment

Well if you think about it that does conjure up some pretty negative images. It suggests men who wear them beat up their wives. I would think the main people who would be offended by that would be the men who wear them. Link to comment
itsallgrand
An aversion to it under your clothes? whoa. That's just silly. You must be unlucky in love! Yup. That's the ticket. Link to comment
servedcold
haha itsallgrand, hilarious, no none of those apply, I'm reasonably fit (stomach not flat but no "gut" either) and tend towards waspy looking, no body art, etc. LOVE a woman to wear them out with an open shirt over, but rarely see this look, probably the bra straps thing. Funny you mention the when to wear clothes thing, as both of the ex GFs wore mostly nothing around the house, yet complained about my undershirts! The ex-ex and the ex were certifiable, though, jury still out on the current one. Link to comment
Hope75
I guess I am weird because I never placed any importance on what T-shirt my partner wears. Link to comment
JadedStar
I guess I am weird because I never placed any importance on what T-shirt my partner wears. It would only bother me if my husband wore one of these types of undershirts out in public as a regular shirt. He is very finicky about that so i don't have to worry about him doing that. lol Underclothes should be underclothes but maybe i'm an old fuddy duddy. i also don't like to see kid's underwear when they wear baggy jeans or girl's thongstraps beacuse her pants are hung too low. I wear low riders but not THAT low so one knows if I shave or not LOL Link to comment

That's like one of the funniest things I read.. Rorrrrorrrr... I personally don't like em on guys cause you see their armpits and the hairyness exposed. Link to comment

CarnelianButterfly
I prefer naked, but tank or t, ehh, its an undershirt. The only time I think undershirts aren't right is when you can see them thru the over shirt, thin fabric is better looking then undie shirt outline. Link to comment
Censored
Singlets (as we call them) are daggy and strange, something from the 80's that only old men wore under their shirts. I wear one everyday, never thought about it till this thread came along. I think i'm suddenly developing a complex about them. Link to comment

If you arent muscular and/or fit, no girl wants to see it. Its just like a girl saying "All the boys dont like me wearing mini skirts or shirts that are revealing" Duh because that 'girl' is fat and who wants to see a nasty girl in a mini skirt showing off cottaged cheese?? Same idea for guys in wife beaters. You think girls would complain inf you had vin diesel arms and chest??? NO. Common sense... Link to comment
