xmrth Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 It's so annoying that the customers that come into my workplace assume I'm either new or stupid because I'm young. I've been with the company at the same position for over a year and a half and at my current location for more than a half a year. I was training this older woman and customers who have seen me countless times actually seriously asked if SHE was training ME. I know it wasn't that they really must have thought that, but it's so annoying. Just because I'm 22 doesn't mean I'm a child or that I don't know what I'm doing. I've noticed this goes BEYOND customers, although it bothers me a lot because I was at another location for a full year and didn't have this problem. My co-workers, now they are another story. Extremely fake older women who did not go to college and are stuck working there or at similar places. Extremely extremely fake and complain about everything and exaggerate everything... they do not do what they are supposed to and CONSTANTLY ask me if I've done things I do on a daily basis just to make it seem like they're doing their jobs. We have a board that we have to fill in sales and I am the only person who filled theirs in. I did on Monday and it was Wednesday and nobody else had yet. And this woman actually asked me what my points were when I filled it in and left the points blank with a line because there were none! It's things like that, really annoying things. I won't be there for much longer, hopefully 2 months at the longest and I'll be in another line of work entirely-- my career. It's just so annoying, I actually am up tossing and turning thinking about fuming mad. I won't get into everything because it's daily. I'm only at that place for 15-18 hours a week anyway and I do something else part time as well so I don't know. I just wanted to complain and vent because I have no choice but to suck it up for another month or possibly 2.
DaDancingPsych Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 I see that you are twenty two and my guess is that you are one of the ones who look twenty two (or younger). Unfortunately, people do treat twenty somethings like we are dumb/useless/ect, because of our age. There's not much you can do about it. I do recommend that you continue doing your job to the best of your ability. Maybe someday someone will notice... maybe not. But your problem will be multiplied if you slack. Secondly, act mature. If you come into work bragging about the drinking party you attended last night, you will be seen as young. (Nothing wrong with the party, but just understand that this is a piece of perception puzzle.) Remember the way you dress also plays into this. Dress the part of the job. If you show up looking professional, you will be treated more so. The good news is that we all age and this will disappear with time. Hang in there!
