kayangel02200 Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 I'm soooo skinny and I can't gain weight no matter what I do. I've tried everything. I'm 5'6 and I weigh 110. I eat a lot and I've tried those weight gain shakes and they don't work. I even went to the doctor and they ran a whole bunch of tests and said everything was normal and I was very healthy. I don't get it, I guess I just have an extremely fast metabolism. I feel disgusting though, my hip bones stick out and you can feel my ribs. It makes me so self conscious. Everyone thinks I have an eating disorder and I have to hear everyday from everybody how skinny I am. I don't know what else to do to gain weight! Is there any way to slow down my metabolism???
Daligal83 Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Have you tried lifting weights? If you put muscle on you, you'll feel and look healthier.
sarey Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 I wouldn't slow down your metabolism cause that can cause very bad problems in the future I'd be grateful if I was you but I ain't So, your doctor should put you on a eating plan... also, building muscle is a bad idea because that'll increase your metabolism even more
annie24 Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 welcome to enotalone. go to a site such as link removed. it has an online food journal, where you can enter the food you are eating, and it will calculate its calories. it could be that you are simply not eating enough calories to gain weight. if a food is not in that journal, you can enter its nutritional information yourself. keep such a log for 1-2 weeks. if you still aren't gaining, print off your journal, and take it to your doctor and have your doctor run tests. i am on weight watchers, and we are told to eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, 2 servings of milk/dairy products, and 2 servings of oil. and this is to LOSE weight. to gain weight, you should do this, plus eat more on top of it. to gain weight, you can make really simple changes, like adding 2 tablespoons of peanut butter to your toast in the morning, or having a cup of ice cream at night. but see your doctor if things don't change. it could be indicative of a bigger problem, like diabetes, cancer, or intestinal worm (eww, i know).
Superfreak Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 but see your doctor if things don't change. it could be indicative of a bigger problem, like diabetes, cancer, or intestinal worm (eww, i know). She's seen her doctor and she's fine. No need to alarm the kid. 110 pounds is a decent weight. Skinny yes, but not unhealthy. I'm really skinny myself, not weighing much more then 110 pounds and I'm 5'11 and I'm a guy. It hasn't really impacted my dating life or anything if your worried about that. The comments about you having an eating disorder are uncalled for and you just have to find a way to make clear to those people that you don't appreciate them saying that. I don't really have any ideas for gaining weight, only that you obviously need to eat more then you currently do in order to do so, and maybe as you get a bit older your metabolism will slow down.
RelaxByWater84 Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 My friend's mom's doctor wanted her to gain weight so he told her to drink shakes such as SlimFast and the like with every meal to gain weight.

I'm really skinny myself, not weighing much more then 110 pounds and I'm 5'11 and I'm a guy. doctors aren't always right, if she suspects something is wrong, she shouldn't just shake it off. wrong diagnoses happen all the time. that said, i'd bet you are just fine (i'm not a doctor and can't perform diagnoses over the internet, lol). i am very skeptical of weight gain shakes, i don't see how they are different from weight loss shakes, just maybe 100 calories extra. and they are expensive. just like how peanut butter can be part of a diet, or part of a weight gain solution, as proposed by some recent studies for malnutrion in africa. PB is cheap, filling, and calorie rich, making it a good weight loss, and weight gain food. from my experience in weight watchers, i would say most people trying to lose weight don't know what a proper portion size is. (ie, meat is a deck of cards, a potato should be the size of a light bulb, rice the size of a tennis ball, cheese the size of a pair of dice). Another mistake dieters make is that they think they are eating only a little, but they forget to include the cookie on the way to the office, the scraps they ate off their child's dinner plate when they were loading the dishwasher, the sample at the grocery store, that all adds up! (I wonder if the reverse is true in your case - you think you are eating a lot, but then if you write it down and see the calories, it will be less than what you think) Most people also have no idea how many calories they should be ingesting. i don't know your weight and height and age, but you should calculate it at a site like : link removed Afterwards, type in every single food you eat, and see if your caloric intake is under your target number, and that may be why you aren't gaining weight. writing everything down has helped me lose weight, maybe it can help you gain weight? i know if you change nothing else in your life, but you eat an extra 2 oreo cookies every day, you will gain 10 pounds by the end of the year. Not suggesting you start eating too many oreos, but pointing out that simple changes can add up. If you'd feel happier with an extra 5 pounds, then go for it. It can be as easy as adding some peanut butter to your carrots or celery sticks, having extra croutons or cheese or beans on your salad, etc. simple changes, over time. good luck!
kayangel02200 Posted December 10, 2007 Author Posted December 10, 2007 thanks, i'll try and add up my calories and see if you're right about me not eating as much as I think I am. If it doesn't work then I don't know what I'm going to do...
EQD Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 Make sure you don't have parasites, its not very common but it does happen. Other than that i would love to be you because i would eat nothing but snack cakes, SONIC's EXTRA LONG CHILI CHEESE CONEYS and Milkshakes with chunks of cookies in them... then i would go to taco bell and get so big i couldnt move for 10 minutes.. then i would go home.. and chow out some more. I used to binge eat so everywhere i went i would always eat something.. um, i think i was 125 at my most hefty.. and 5'1''. Protein and excercise should do it. Helps to build muscle and not fat.
ghost69 Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 work out but eat about 3000 calories. yes count them and spread them out throughout the day so you don't make yourself feel sick.
amtjrtcet Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 Well, for the last 10 days I've increased my calorie intake, lowered my cardio from 1hr to 30mins, and increased my weights by 5lbs. I've gained 1lb so far. I can't really see it, & it could just be that I weighed myself at different times of the day, but I think I'm in the right direction. Alot of people have told me to try protein shakes, eeewww. I just can't do it.
Sweet Buttabean Jellayroll Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 breakfast - chitlins, greens, fried chicken, spaghetti lunch - burger king, mcdonalds dinner - chitlins, chicken, fish, chocolate. do this for about 3 months and if it doesent work consult a doctor
