Occasionally he'll let out a little moan but for the most part it's just quiet and it's kind of bothering me. Could that mean he's not enjoying it? He's never given me suggestions on how to improve or told me what he likes or even guided me at all. So I'm thinking maybe he's sitting in silence thinking "Ah crap, let it be over already!"

I think the obvious way to tell if he is enjopying it, is if there is an "end result". If you are worried that he is not enjoying it, do somethings differently, have fun with him and tease him with "do you like this........" whilst doing something different. Another sign i would imagine is that if he wasn't enjoying it, he probably wouldn't let you do it.

More likely, his thought process is something like... OMG. I can't believe this. This is the most fantastic feeling I've ever had. I never want it to end. I'm in heaven. If I died right now, for some reason, I think I'd be ok with it. I better not move or make too much noise. I better not do anything. What if I make the wrong move and she stops? What if I say something, it's the wrong thing, and I piss her off and she stops. Screw that... not a peep from me. I'm not going to do anything to make this stop. Just shut up stupid (talking to self) and don't make any sudden movements. Perhaps this will never end. God, I hope not.

I think you can tell just by their technique if they are into it or not. Or even if they seem eager to do it, not just willing. Nothing worse than trying to enjoy yourself when you feel your partner isn't.

I never really noticed it until I had a girlfriend who was annoyed that I was quiet because she wanted affirmation. So I started talking and have never stopped since. Sometimes I even get the "shut up your are distracting me" comments since I've probably gone too far being verbose But my silence WAS NEVER and indication that I wasn't in complete bliss.
