Well, first of all, it looks like the agent crossed the line. Take a look at link removed, a piece of federal legislation in the United States that protects your rights against abusive debt collectors. California may have additional state legislature; I'm not too familiar with it but here's link removed that details those rights as well.

I know what it's like to be in bad debt. Have you considered talking to a debt management agency? It will probably hurt your credit to do so in the short run, but in the long run it would probably let you build it back up much quicker. There are non-profit agencies out there that will help you manage your debt for cheap or free.

Why are you letting him win? If that *** is having a bad day don't let him ruin yours. Ya, being called names SUCKS (i know). It may make your day crappy, but guess what, tomorrow is a new day. And its not to far away Keep looking at the horizon.

Your smart enough to own a car, have a job, right? I know many people who aren't even smart enough to know how to post on a forum like this! lol. But it doesn't make them "stupid"....name calling is a way for people to get under your skin...don't let him do it!

insofar beat me to it, but here's another link along the same lines from the LA county department of consumer affairs:

Can they contact my employer or other people I know?

They can only contact them to find out where you live and where you work. They cannot discuss the debt with them.

They cannot call you at work if you have told them that your employer does not allow such calls.

I'd call back (either from home or on a work break) and speak to a supervisor about the unprofessional, abusive behavior (calling you "stupid") and tell them they cannot call you at work.

Back in the day I had some problems when I got laid off and had all sorts of collection agencies calling me. (Happy to say I have excellent credit now!) But if any one of them had called me stupid? Wow, they would hear from me. What agency was it? You should write them a letter of complaint.

Don't feel bad. He had no right to talk to you like that.
