The Pill... I Went To The Doctors...

Recommended Posts

Okaii, After reading the advice from my other post... i went to the doctors. I talked to my mum before though, i didnt say i was sexually active i said ive been looking into it and it really helps your periods, and seeing as my periods are very irregular... I went.

I went to the doctors before explaining that i hadent been on in 6months... and he said that i should come back if i dont come on in a month... But i came on.

After going to the doctors and asking for the pill the doctor asked me about my periods again after being off for tht length of time, i explained that i had come on that week after seeing him before, but he still asked me questions, these are the questions he asked me and how i responed, i think you should know if your going to help me:

Are your current periods Painful?: Yes, very, mostly in the lower back and at the front of my lower stomach.

Are They clotty?: Sometimes, not all the time mostly towards the end.

When was the last time you were on your period: 27th July.

(Btw, i havent been on sense then, meaning i am late again)

He then told me i can go on the pill, but he wants to do some tests, I had a blood test for glucose levels and normal blood test, he took my blood pressure too. I got the results back of my test and everything was fine and so was my blood preasure.

I Have an ultra scan on Tuesday...

So what could be wrong? I went to the doctors asking for the pill and came out having tests done on me... none of my friends had this...

Im Really confused and he wont tell me anything and im scared that when i have my ultra scan (My mum will be there and theres no gettin rid of her) that they will say something because she still doesnt know im sexally active.

Whats Wrong With Me

He is probably doing all the tests as you have very irregular periods and he wants to rule out any problems that are causing the irregular periods, before prescribing what is right for you to you. The ultra sound may be to examine irregularities in the reproductive system, or look for inflammation, etcetera.

The pill is still medication, and he has to make sure you are healthy enough to take it.

Your friends may have gone and got it, but had more regular periods or told him it was for birth control so they only did a cursory questionnaire/check up.

it's still possible you're pregnant... some women continue to have a period or spot throughout pregnancy..

with that being said...

your doctor could be testingfor a number of things...the one thing that stands out in my mind is Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome(PCOS)... i have this and it sounds like all of the tests my doctor did to find out... don't be scared--it's nothing to worry about. a good diet, exercise and birth control will get this under control...IF it's that...

He could just be doing routine blood work...but the ultrasound seems random

The doctor is screwing you around. Go to a health clinic and they will give you a pack or two of pills right away. Don't bother going to that doctor again, it sounds like he's doing this to discourage you from going on the pill and might be forcing his religious crap on you.

BE CAREFUL on the pill...... it's dangerous and could cause LOTS of problems! You may need to try different types of pills, don't be afraid to change until you find the right one! You should also look into "the patch" and the nuva ring, I think they are both available in England.

Good luck!

That is exactly what I was wondering too, due to the irregular periods and pain.

So, you want to go on the pill, but you are basically lying to everyone, including the doctors, about the real reason?

And you had your last period right when you had sex last? Why do you not think you could be pregnant from this?

I'm confused. You said you had your period around July 27th? It's not even the end of August.. how do you figure you are late?

PCOS was exactly what I was thinkin' too.

Ultrasound can show whether ovaries are enlarged or have visible cysts consistent with PCOS.

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 27. IF that's what your doc is looking for, being on the pill is the first/preferred way to manage it.

Actually, the doctor is being thorough and examining all angles to rule out any serious medical problems before just prescribing the pill when he has no answers for why your period is late.

I would prefer a doctor who is thorough like this rather than some quack who only knows how to write a prescription.

I really doubt that the doc is going to do that! It just sounds like the doc is genuinely concerned about the painful periods and is being cautious here.

There are many reasons why you could have irregular periods. The doctor was concerned about it. That's his job, to make sure that you are ok. So all the tests he did was necessary.

In America, (I donno about England, but I would think it's similar) even if you were underage, and you need contraception from your doctor, your doctor will NOT TELL your mom about it. There is a thing called patient-doctor confidentiality. Even if you were PREGNANT, the doctor will NOT TELL your mom. So, don't be scared about that. But you probably will have to tell your mom if your belly starts growing bigger.

The OP didn't have a period for six months prior to her recent one. The doctor is doing exactly the right thing by testing because it COULD point to a medical problem, and he wants to rule that out.

The pill is not dangerous, unless you are already at risk for a pulmonary embolism for other reasons (such as an extremely sedentary life or heavy smoking), which is unlikely at the OP's age.

Lilvamp, I think it's odd that he won't tell you what he's testing for. Why not give them a call and explain to the assistant that you are really worried about all these tests without knowing what they are looking for. Hopefully he/she will explain or get the doctor to explain. My first thought would also have been PCOS, but that tends to come with a lot of other symptoms that your doctor didn't ask about, so maybe he's not looking for anything specific, but just doing a broad screening in case something is causing the irregularity.

Your period isn't late yet, it hasn't been a month since your last one started, and most pregnancy tests aren't accurate until after your next period should have started. Are you protecting yourself from pregnancy in some other way than the pill?

An ultrasound will not the the doctor or your mum anything about your sexual activity, and you could always tell her you feel uncomfortable having her in the room with you and ask her to wait outside. How old are you?

take care,

C

Obviously you don't know much about womens health or you would not be saying that. The doctor is only doing what he is supposed to do. Whats going on with her is very abnormal and the doctor would be out of his mind to not do all the testing. There could be something serriously wrong causing all these problems and the only way to know is to know for sure is to test.

Oh, and I also should add to the OP, you need to inform the doctor that you are sexually active, they will not share this information with your parents but you do need to atleast tell them as it can play a big part in things.

In the case of pregnancy Doctors are to tell the parent/legal guardian if the person is a minor otherwise they risk many many lawsuits.

NO! Please don't write stuff as facts when you do not know your facts accurately. I KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. Unless, you were referring to a country other than USA, i'm sorry but you are wrong.

A minor is and will be treated by the doctor for pregnancy or even abortion without the doctor informing the parent. This is the law in USA. Albeit, the doctor will try to urge the patient to tell the guardian, the doctor will NOT break the patient confidentiality.

I also know what i'm talking about, I have been there! I was 16 when I got pregnant and guess what my doctor had to inform my parents because of health risks.

hey mythical suicide,

sorry to hear about your personal experience. i donno if the laws have changed since then. but what i know is the current practice.

i know that technically, the doctor is not allowed to break the patient confidentiality, but he will strongly urge you to tell your guardian. but if you were adamant about your guardian not knowing, i doubt he would have crossed that line. but in your case, you said there were health risks... so under certain circumstances, the doctor is allowed to break the confidentiality. I donno what your specific health risks were, but as far as medical ethics are concerned, he should have informed someone only if you were a danger to yourself or to others.

Otherwise, unless the law was different back in the day during your times, I would say your doctor infringed upon your patient rights.

Wow! I would've thought you'd have more symptoms, my friend has irregular periods and body and facial hair.

I'm in a similar situation, I have VERY irregular periods, always have. Whenever I go a while without one I have a little pregnancy scare, even though I'm in an LDR so only have sex once/twice a month, each time using condoms. I think I may have PCOS, I've always had resonably painful periods and lots of PMS. I'm trying so be healthier before I put myself on more medication though, lots of primrose oil and gentle exercise.
