  1. As we move forward through life, making decisions and choices, be it big or small the consequence of each decision accumulates over time. We have no choice but to accept and live with the reality of what we have left for ourselves. Each individual will have a different experience and understanding of their own circumstances, but if you break it down and step back, your current state of living in any given period can simply be attributed to the choices you have made in your past, whether that be to your satisfaction or despair. Often times it is easy to feel trapped in our current situation and forget that the reality is of our own making. We are responsible for our behavior and resulting aims; any frustrations at the state of your life may, in fact, be directed inwards. You regardless had an opportunity to direct yourself in the right or wrong direction, meaning there is no one to blame but yourself. Even if certain factors such as life events and emotional impairment were present, there were still deliberative decisions made. Therefore, try not to succumb too heavily to guilt, instead accept the responsibility that comes with being accountable for your choices. Embracing this premise opens up the possibility of understanding and controlling the process of how you choose to conduct your life, making decisions with intended outcomes in mind. If any attempt is made to change anything in the world, we must first start from within ourselves. Take a step back, reflect and adjust your ideals, dreams, and ambitions. Visualize and appreciate the change that needs to be made for each individual in order to meet their desired outcomes. Every decision is different, weighing past experiences and current feelings against the judgment of human nature. Think about all the opportunities you have created for yourself in the past and focus on earning the same amount of pride in the future. Adopting an optimistic and grateful approach to the choices that have been made can make a huge difference in how we perceive and then, interpret our life. Even if people change their lives after stumbling, they still experienced failure which ultimately taught a valuable lesson, leading them to possible success. Regret is two-sided, it contains a darkness that reflects bad times, unwanted experiences, and difficult choices, but also contains a flicker of hope, of learning, of strength, and perseverance to be able to overcome hardships. Meaning that although life can veer off in surprising directions resulting in bitterness, you should still value these forks in the road, try to find a way forward and use them to your advantage. What happens going forward is based on one simple realization: your life is a result of your choices, not anyone else's. Your life is constantly changing, just like the seasons and winds, so you should extend the same grace and acceptance to yourself as you would with nature. Your life doesn't have to be perfect and pretty, it can be filled with uncertainties and mistakes, still being loved and finite at the same time. There will be bad decisions and regrets, but none that can't be amended and transformed into optimistic memories that can be shared with others. It is important to remember you are ultimately the creator of your life no matter where you've been or are now. Take responsibility, but remember that while you are only responsible for the choices you make, you are never alone. Those around you can offer valuable insight and perspective, just remember much of life is built on resilience and courage. Learning from the past, appreciating the present and looking forward to future can lay the groundwork for positive decisions and hopeful outcomes.
  2. I’m twenty-six and I feel like I’m living in a state of limbo. On one hand, I’m told that I’m an adult; I have a career and I am expected to take responsibility for certain things. On the other hand, I still feel like I’m a kid; I’m still figuring out my life and feeling the stresses of growing up. I’m stuck in the middle, neither a kid nor an adult, so when will I stop being a teenager? Adulthood is a strange situation to find myself in. It can be both exciting and frustrating at the same time. I’m no longer beholden to my parents like I was as a kid and I have a chance to explore the world and make my own decisions. At the same time, I am painfully aware of how much I don’t know and it can be hard to accept that I can’t turn to anyone else to figure it out. The pressure to ‘grow up’ can be immense and there seems to be a never ending pressure to do more and do better. I have a career and a house, but are these really signs that I’m an adult? I still don’t feel like I’ve really made it into adulthood. I still feel like I’m just muddling through and trying to get by. The truth is that everyone’s timeline is different and there is no right or wrong answer to when we should all stop being teenagers. Some people seem to transition more seamlessly than others, but for most of us, it is a long and winding road filled with ups and downs, successes and failures. We learn and grow from our experiences, both good and bad, and eventually start to understand who we are and what we want from life. We may not be able to pinpoint an exact moment when we transition from teenager to adult, but over time, we begin to develop the wisdom, experience, and responsibility to understand that adulthood isn’t about having a title or achieving certain milestones; it’s about accepting life for what it is and making choices that reflect our values, beliefs, and sense of self. As we embrace adulthood and our unique paths, we gain a deep understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
  3. Weddings are a joyous occasion of union, a time to celebrate with family, friends and future-in-laws. But when certain obligations fall onto only one side of the aisle, resentment and animosity can fester like an untreated wound. When one party expects the other to foot the bill for their wedding without offering any recompense, it can put the couple in a difficult and stressful situation. This is precisely what occurred for Melissa and Tom, whose in-laws expected them to pick up the tab for the bulk of their wedding celebration. After numerous requests from both sides of the family to chip in, Tom and Melissa finally mustered the courage to tell their in-laws they would need to pay their share of the expenses or else reduce the number of their guests. Little did they expect that their in-laws would simply ignore their request and keep on inviting their pals, as if nothing had ever been discussed in the first place. This very same scenario is repeated all across the country, as brides and grooms find themselves stuck in between the demands of their families and the demands of their wedding budget. So, the question remains: What can couples do when their in-laws refuse to pay their share of the wedding costs, but still invite more and more people? The first step is to speak to both sets of parents—and soon!—regardless of how uncomfortable the conversations may be. Let them know why you asked them to cover part of the costs and how their nonpayment will greatly affect the budget. Do your best to remain calm, collect, and composed, but make sure you emphasize the need for a financial contribution or an adjustment to the guest list. Of course, many couples want to make their in-laws feel special on their most sacred day. If you feel like a financial contribution is not possible, then offer alternative options such as a speech during the ceremony or a reading at the reception. These gestures may not cost your in-laws money, but still demonstrate that you recognize their presence and importance. If your in-laws are insistent on hosting a grand wedding but unwilling to pay for it, you may need to explore other means of financing. Talk to your significant other about opening a wedding loan, or cutting back the guest list with the fewest relatives possible and accept only gifts from other family members. it may be necessary to draw the line before things spiral out of control. This was the course of action for Tom and Melissa. With help of close family and friends, they were able to narrow down the guest list and stick to a reasonable budget. On the day of their wedding, they were feeling grateful and relieved, knowing that they had taken the steps needed to ensure the success of their big day. At the end of the day, couples should know that they have the final say in the matters of their wedding and financial decisions, even when faced with pushback from their in-laws. Although it’s important to show respect and consideration to both sides of the family, settling the wedding details should be a joint effort. It can be hard to set limits with your in-laws, but ultimately, it’s the best thing for you, your spouse and your pocketbook.
  4. The search for the best male personality type can be an elusive one. Everyone has unique traits, manifesting in different combinations, ultimately creating a distinct personality. However, when it comes to searching for a set of qualities that might be considered the ideal, it can be difficult to determine the “best”. What is traditional masculinity? Is it the strong and silent type, bravely understanding that what is not said will speak louder than words? Or perhaps it is the man who’s able to protect and provide for his family, fiercely loyal and courageous? The truth is, there are many good qualities that could be attributed to being a positive male role model. Qualities such as being sensitive to the people around you and being able to listen attentively, or having the self-awareness to understand your own strengths and limitations. A successful leader would be calm and collected enough to handle a variety of situations with an even head, and capable of making tough decisions after weighing all options. A wise father figure will understand the importance of teaching children respect, integrity, and courage. Regardless of the situation, it is important to remain mindful of how your own behavior affects others. Along with empathy, kindness and compassion are also must-have characteristics. Being open-minded and having a sense of humor can go a long way as well. But what is most important is taking responsibility for your actions and having a sense of integrity. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to what comprises the best male personality type. It's up to each individual to discover his own unique qualities and strive to be the best version of himself. We can all strive to appreciate and recognize the value of good traits like kindness, integrity, empathy and respect in all genders, instead of focusing on outdated concepts of what “traditional” masculinity should be.
  5. Having a pet can be a huge responsibility but in some cases, particularly when it comes to dogs, having a pet can become even more demanding. Owners of dogs have a huge responsibility when it comes to hosting, ensuring their pet is taken care of and is on its best behaviour. Without respecting the responsibilities of dog ownership, inviting guests over can become a nightmare! That is why it's important to be aware of all the different responsibilities dog owners have when opening their homes to others. First and foremost, owners need to ensure the safety of both their pet and the visitors. A pet dog should have all their shots up to date and owners should assess any risks associated with the presence of their pet in the house. It is also important to consider if any visitor has allergies that could be triggered by being in the same house as a pet and make sure that the environment is prepared accordingly. Additionally, dog owners must also think of laying down rules for visitors to follow such as not to feed the animal or take it for walks without permission. It is also essential for owners to know how to control their pet’s behaviour if it gets too rowdy or aggressive. Dogs should be well-trained and respond to verbal commands from their owner’s in order to ensure order and mutual respect when people come over. If necessary, owners might also want to look into getting a muzzle for the pet, especially if it is big and known to misbehave. Furthermore, it would be wise to designate a spot in the house as a safe area, away from the visitors, which the dog can go to if it feels overwhelmed or uncomfortable. Owners also have to remember to clean up after their pet leaves any messes behind. Cleaning up after the pet is a show of respect towards those who come over and will likely make them much more willing to enter a space where a pet lives. Keeping their pet’s living space immaculate will also be beneficial for the long-term health of their pet and it is a good habit for an owner to develop when sharing their home with others. Finally, owners must remember to be mindful of how their pet interacts with visitors and be watchful of its reactions. If the animal appears scared or aggressive, then the owner should be prepared to intervene and limit any interactions between the pet and guests. Even if the animal appears calm, owners should still be sure to keep an eye out and never let their pet roam free while visitors are in the house. Making sure the pet remains near its owner is the best way to ensure it wont cause any trouble. By understanding and following these responsibilities, dog owners can help make sure the experience of hosting visitors with a pet is a positive and harmonious one. Taking the time to plan out the hosting experience and lay down the ground rules will end up saving everyone involved from potential problems in the future. Being aware of the large responsibilities of pet ownership is an important part of setting your pet and your home up for success.
  6. Most of us desire a meaningful and happy life. To achieve this, it’s important to recognize that happiness is paved through taking responsibility for your choices. We aim to build physical muscles by working out at the gym, which similarly helps our psychological strength as we strain to make good choices throughout life. It often takes courage to step up to the plate and own the decisions we make and the consequences those decisions bring. This can bring powerful rewards though when we do. Taking responsibility reminds us that destiny is largely in our own hands, allowing us to take action wherever necessary. This empowers us to transform our lives, rather than dwelling and ruminating over what we cannot change. Personal growth requires us to assess our prior decisions, and then offer most constructive criticism with ourselves. This may involve questioning our choices to help develop a better strategy and gain insight. We can then possess enough awareness to create a better platform for decision-making moving forward. When confronting or up against difficult situations, it’s essential to remember that self-compassion helps us through these trying times. Research has proven that habitually blaming yourself after making an unfavorable choice can be mentally and emotionally relenting. Connecting with the higher power of self-compassion, however, adds much-needed self-care and warmth. This provides comfort, lets us make sense of our experiences and gives respite from harm. It also never hurts to talk through issues with a mental health professional, who can provide further validation and perspective-shift. They can act as sounding board and coach, helping us to effectively untangle complex thoughts and feelings. Understanding our part in seeing certain situations turn out in such a way offers understanding, even if mistakes have been made in the past. We can use the wisdom gained from mistakes prevent them reoccuring. The more mistakes we make in life, the more lessons learnt, like having badminton racquets replaced when they’re worn out. With every poor choice, we’re likely to put an even bigger emphasis on making healthier decisions next time around. Your ability to both recognize and take responsibility for your choices isn’t always instantaneous - but it does get easier with consistency. By continuing to practice self-awareness, compassion and open-mindedness, we can cultivate better strategies for making decisions in the long run. Practices including journaling, yoga and regular exercise can ground us in the face of ever-fluctuating circumstances. Whatever your reasons for not acting responsibly, know that transforming one's life in this way provides an impactful opportunity to reach our desired goals. It’s within this structure that we can discover true contentment and accept our authentic selves. Taking responsibility for your choices represents a fundamental building block of a happier and more fulfilling future.
