  1. I'm feeling particularly lethargic today, which is annoying me because I don't feel like doing anything productive.
  2. Man, this guy at work was so freaking rude to me tonight. I still can't stop replaying it in my head. I really, really hate being a bartender sometimes. Basically, he was mad because I wouldn't hook him up with extra alcohol in his drink, so he began insulting my competence and implied that I am not a bartender at some high-end place because I'm not skilled enough. (I've worked at other bars, and have had many compliments on my skills from customers. In fact, I have been told by management on numerous occasions that I am the best bartender at my bar.) It just made me so mad. Also, I know that I didn't short-pour him because I remember making his drink, and I generally don't short-pour people. And then he called me a name! I had to have my manager toss him out. Sigh. I can't wait until I'm done with all my internships and I can quit working in the service industry. What makes it worse is that somehow I'm supposed to stand there and listen to condescension, or name-calling, or criticism, or downright rudeness, and not react. I'm just not zen enough for that. I think anyone would react if a person was questioning their competence. Grrr, I HATE the service industry.
  3. Does anyone else sort of not like audiobooks, because you can't skim or speed-read?
  4. People who lament how unfair their lives have been, never taking responsibility for themselves. I get it - you've been through hell. But when do you decide to stop making the actions of others your entire basis of living? When do you start living for yourself?
  5. That meditation I did before work really improved my mood and focus.
  6. I watched The Sixth Sense for the first time. I actually really liked it! Anyone seen Crimson Peak? I was unsure if it would be any good or not.
  7. In other book news, I just started The Grand Design by Hawking/Mlodinow and it's pretty terrific.
  8. Yes, my book club members and I have been all over this story, ha ha. I don't know if Harper Lee is being exploited or not, I think it's pretty hard to tell. I mean, yes, she has been reclusive all her life and said she didn't want the manuscript published, but there's the fact to consider that she's getting old and probably will die soon, and maybe she wants to get it out there before she dies. I don't think we'll ever be able to figure out if she's been strong-armed into publishing. I think the best for all involved would probably be if the estate executor publishes it after she dies. The only other thing that would make people feel better about this is if Harper could give a FTF interview, which by all accounts is not possible in her condition.
  9. Anyone excited about the sequel to To Kill A Mockingbird???
  10. I am reading "Damned" by Chuck Palahniuk. Oral sex on giantesses . . . oh, Chuck. I think you're so gratuitous sometimes I lose track of what you're trying to say. Next up: "The Grand Design" by Stephen Hawking.
  11. I just read The Giver by Lois Lowry and really liked it. Want to get the whole series. Has anyone read Digital Fortress by Dan Brown? Just started reading it yesterday and I'm a bit disappointed. I feel like he's babysitting me and repeating stuff a lot, and the main character is badly written IMO. Just picked up the entire Chronicles of Narnia at Goodwill for $0.99. Yeeeeahh!
  12. Exit Ghost by Philip Roth. It's really bumming me out. But I can't put it down.
  13. I thought it was engaging and only noticed a couple of typos, as mentioned by others. I also imagined her as older than 12 - I was thinking 15 or 16. So how much older was the guy, cause he seemed 19-20 to me? In this part, You effectively communicated the tension between mother and daughter. I think "on her way to the waiting room" is unnecessary - we know where she's going. The scene in the car also communicates the tension well.
  14. I'm reading a biography of Darwin by Niles Eldredge. It's pretty interesting - I had no idea Darwin waited twenty years to publish his theory!
  15. James Lee Burke - Light of the World Made me double-check the locks on my doors a few times. I think it's really one of his best.
  16. I love that one! Read it a couple times. I'm reading A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan.
  17. "A Great Deliverance" by Elizabeth George. I can read whatever I want right now, so I SHALL glut myself on glorious detective mysteries!!! Yesssss!!!
  18. The Book Thief. I'm having a bit of trouble getting into it, maybe because of the style of writing . . . not sure . . . anyone else read it?
  19. I'm not reading much fiction now since school started back up. Next on my list is "The spy who came in from the cold". Anyone read it?
  20. I'm curious what you'll think about the ending . . . I finished that series a few years ago. I would totally sport a Dark Tower t-shirt!!
  21. If you like a good detective novel, I'd recommend anything by Jo Nesbo. I've been hooked on him lately. I especially loved "Phantom" and "The Devil's Star". I like Neil Gaiman a lot so far too . . . so far I've read "Starlight" and "Coraline" and liked them both. I'll have to check out "The Graveyard Book". I like the strong female leads in this series as well. The last book I read in which the female point of view was very well represented was "The Mists of Avalon". Have you read that one? Author is Marrion Zimmer Bradley. I'd love to do this one for book club but it's too long.
  22. I thought this one was very interesting, and it gave me a new perspective on behavior in relationships. I'm re-reading the Dragonriders of Pern trilogy right now. Just finished "Subliminal" by Leonard Mlodinow - that was very interesting! Highly recommend it.
