4 months with a cold?!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Just looking to see if anyone has any advice. I’ve honestly had a snotty cold/body aches/fatigue since the end of October. I’ve had antibotics that made no difference, then I came back and was told ‘you’re stressed and that’s why you aren’t getting better’ by a doctors but they agreed to do a blood test. I’m low in vitamin D so for the last 6 weeks I’ve been on some supplements and some liquid capsules. It’s not made any difference to the cold and it’s really getting to me, I constantly feel exhausted and it’s making me feel very depressed. I’m having vitamins, drinking lots of water/green tea, I go on long walks to exercise even though I feel so tired and try to eat a good diet. I just don’t know what to do anymore, I’ve been taking days off work as holiday because I feel bad for having time off work for a cold but I feel so rubbish and it’s gone on for so long now I just don’t see the end. I’m the sole income in my household because I have a partner with a chronic illness so I need to be healthy and feeling good at work.

Anyone experienced something similar?

Go to an allergist and ENT. Get your thyroid tested. Make sure you are not loading up with all sorts of herbal remedies, food, pet dander, etc you're allergic to. Get a HEPA filter for your bedroom. Get more sleep. You've had a workup and a course of antibiotics and that's not working.

Stress can contribute to fatigue and depression but not upper respiratory symptoms, per se. Also get a referral to a therapist to unpack some of this stress and get some lifestyle management tips such as dealing with your, unfortunately, unproductive partner.

The majority of people are low in vitamin D thanks to sunscreen lol

Antibiotics do not treat a cold.

A cold is caused by one of thousands of different strains of viruses. Antibiotics are for bacterial infections only.

How many different GP’s have you seen for this?

Lots of other diseases and viruses have very similar symptoms to a cold or a flu. Sounds like you need to get to a different GP and press them hard for better answers than what you are getting. No cold or flu will go on for months. If doctors can't find anything, it could be environmental. Exposure to mold or other allergens/chemicals can give you these types of symptoms as well.

Agree with Wiseman, it's most likely allergies, tis the season!

That said, I am recovering from a bad bronchial infection and on Saturday (two days ago) starting taking an antibiotic called z-pack, and after struggling with the infection for almost two weeks, the z-pack knocked it right out!

Be careful of side effects, I couldn't sleep so doctor prescribed a sleeping med temporarily. Last night I slept 7 hours!

I'd never heard of z-pack before but many people swear by it.

Being sick sucks, Hope you feel better!

Seems like allergies. I echo going to see a specialist... and a naturopath to get assessed at a holistic level.

Have you tried taking an antihistamine like Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride or Cetrizine Hydrochloride to see if you feel better?

I did speak to a pharmacist inbetween appointments as it’s a challenge getting one unless it’s urgent in the uk. He did say I should take antihistamines which I did every day for 3 weeks and didn’t see a difference so I stopped.

Might be worth taking again, I’ll try anything at this point!

I’ve seen 2, the third time I was at the doctors it was for the blood test. As well as speaking to a pharmacist. I have this habit of always feeling like I’m wasting doctors time as it’s only a cold and I’m just told it’s a virus so you have to wait for your body to fight it off. But it’s just gone on for so long and I feel exhausted even after a good nights sleep.

I had fatigue for almost nine months and could barely keep my Job, had test after test ...They finally found out I had post viral fatigue from glandular fever. They said if it lasted more than a year it would be declared chronic fatigue and I just had to wait til it went away. Have you been tested for that? I assumed I had been but the doctor had missed it. Hope you feel better soon.

I'd see an Ears Nose Throat specialist, and while he or she will likely perform an endoscopy (doesn't hurt) of your nasal cavity, I'd be prepared to be told to take one of the over the counter antihistamines (except for Zycam) withOUT the decongestant, and to use saline spray to clean your nose nightly before spraying a dose of Fluticasone Propionate antihistamine nasal spray like Flonase. The two antihistamines work on different prongs, so they can be taken together.

Many allergies feel awful, like a flu or a cold, and they can deplete your strength. Treating daily with antihistamines through the next season change can set you up to test how well you can live without them in an opposite season.

Good luck, and let a specialist diagnose you.

Living with an unemployed addict is the obvious cause of your stress. No amount of "healthy lifestyle" is going to compensate for being with a drug addict who can't keep a job. No amount of doctors or antibiotics or herbs or whatever are going to make you feel better then you live in a hazmat zone. Considering how honest addicts tend to be, get an STD panel done especially including hep b and c and hiv.

While I understand some of your judgement because of my previous posts, my partner has had loads of support for his addiction and has been clean for 4 months now. Nor has he ever cheated on me, so that kind of judgement is both nasty and uncalled for. Yes it’s hard because he’s not working but he’s been at doctors continually about the ongoing headaches. So while money wise I can get stressed, home life is generally good! I understand that this forum is used to advice but I was asking for advice about my illness not judgments on my relationship which this post isn’t about.

The times I’ve been to docs they have just checked my throat, nose, ears, chest, the usual stuff and just say it’s an upper respiratory tract infection. They haven’t flagged my symptoms as anything serious tbh. And it probably isn’t. It’s just so frustrating feeling like this every day because I know it’s not normal. Thank you! I hope you don’t deal with any form of fatigue anymore!

You see no connection between your fatigue and financially supporting a recovering addict?

Lack of sunshine will cause fatigue and malaise not to mention it is dangerous for your long term health. I hope you'll feel better very soon. I had bronchitis for 4 mos last year and felt like dying! Perhaps get a more thorough blood test to see if your blood is telling you there is more to not feeling well than a cold. As for diet, drastically change your diet. Cut out all sugar and refined processed carbs.

Because you have many of Lyme's symptoms and only get a small window of time to kill it, I took the liberty of reprinting your PM to me:

"Hi,

No I haven’t! To be honest I need to go back to the docs to see if something is going on but just feel like I’ll get fobbed of again. I don’t want to make a big deal out of it, I just want to feel better. I’ll look an appointment and see what they say. :)"

Get tested ASAP!

Because Lyme's bacteria (Borrelia Burgdorferi) only stay in the blood for a short time before "screwing" themselves into every cell in the body, including bone and nerves. The window of killing them with a proper course of antibiotics is finite.

The length of time the antibiotics are taken is critical. To kill all the spirochetes, it can NEVER be below ten days! If a doctor suggest anything less, get up and leave that fools office. In my opinion, fourteen days is the minimum.

Btw, I have a friend who knew she had been bitten, had the symptoms and her doctor told her she could stop taking the antibiotics after nine days. She's now a cripple.

The Doctor's reasoning? "We don't have Lyme's down here." (Georgia 2006)

P.S, I think Z-paks are the main cause of super-bugs.
