Seeing two Drs

I have been seeing my regular gp for almost 10 years, last year I fell ill and have a complex medical problem, she is a good dr but a lot of things now she puts down to “a bad nervous system” I wasn’t happy with this so went to other Drs who did blood test which results are all over the place, i want to keep her as my main dr because she deals with my return to work documents, but I went to her again today with another complaint and she said “that’ll be your nervous system” when I know it’s not as I’ve had a scan with the other gp and it shows a problem. I don’t know if I should tell her I’ve been seeing other Drs and show her what they have found or what? I feel so guilty for going behind her back and seeing other Drs but it is my health and my body and I’m afraid she’s missing things and if I only stuck to her a lot would have been missed that could potentially affect my life and length of it. My main question is how do I share the results with her without her getting mad at me for seeing other Drs behind her back??? If it wasn’t for my work documents I would stop going to her but she has to fill in the forms as I’m only back at work part time due to my health..

You owe no loyalty to your doctor. Also, she sounds so glib and incompetent that I question the veracity of this story. If its real, I don't see why you'd go to the first doctor at all.

My first dr was good for basic things, such as Pap smears, tonsillitis stuff like that. Now that I have something complex going on I’ve realised she’s not that good and is happy to pin it all on my overactive nervous system - she hasn’t done a blood test in over 6 months even though I complain of how exhausted I am when the other dr did one they saw my haemoglobin had dropped significantly as well as other electrolytes and said something is definitely wrong the hard part is figuring out what, The only reason I still go to her is because she is the dr in charge of my return to work paperwork (can only work part time due to this sickness) which I have to get done monthly. If it wasn’t for that I wouldn’t bother going back to her at all.

Why not request she does another blood test? It is your right. If she refuses, then you simply tell her you're going to go for a second opinion and leave. You don't have to return. Simply go back to the second doctor if you're happy with him/her.

I did that in the past, when the last blood test she did (6months or so ago) I saw my calcium had spiked and I wanted a repeat in a few weeks but she got stroppy and said “I need to stop worrying and let her be the dr” and that it was normal (I do know a bit about blood as I work in pathology) and wanted to put me on anti depressants when I know for a fact I’m not depressed. Everything I have complained about health wise has turned out to be something, hence it’s definitely not in my head. I just feel like I have my hands tied with the return to work paperwork

I dont get why doctors are so quick to put people on anti depressants.

Anyhow, it sounds worrying, so I would just register with the 2nd Dr and maybe write to her boss, as this could next be a cancer diagnosis with someone missed.

You are free to get second opinions. Why not get a referral to a specialist, get properly diagnosed and treated and learn about what your medical conditions are and how to best manage them.

Are you afraid other doctors will confer with her and she will no longer approve your disability/return to work documents? Is she a company physician or someone you must use as your primary care physician because of an insurance network? Why does she need the results of your other tests?

I have to use her as my primary care one as she has been handling my return to work plan and not sure I could just switch it over to another dr very easily. I’m happy with the new dr I’m seeing and he seems like he is going to find out what exactly is causing me to be so sick. I wanted her to have the results of my other tests so she is kept in the loop with what’s going on with my health (as I still will have to see her for work purposes). It’s such a hard situation. I have told her in the past I’ve had to go to other Drs as I can’t get into her sometimes for 3 weeks so I will just say that happened again and they found some odd results on my blood tests and go from there... I don’t want to offend her but in the end it’s my health on the line and I guess if anyone is to feel bad it will be her for dismissing a lot of my concerns that have turned out to be actually something wrong and not just my nervous system

If she is incompetent, a quack, unethical or someone who just signs disability papers, sending her results is pointless because it will not change her level of competency or lack of ethical practices.. If you are hoping these abnormalities extend your disability and she is not willing to then there is an ethical dilemma all the way around.

Why not follow up with the doctors who are doing the tests/treatments that help you? You can't make her competent by sending her results. Why can't the doctors you are seeing for further testing continue to treat you?

It very unclear why you need to send her results. It's very unclear why you are not being referred to a neurologist or whatever area the symptoms or supposed abnormalities are. Aren't you entitled to see certain specialists? Surely she has taken routine tests? And given you more a than vague quack 'diagnoses'?

It’s scary stuff! I’m glad I decided to seek a second opinion as he has already picked up a lot of things she has missed by just ordering some simple tests and he seems to think outside the box so to speak. I feel better in what I’m doing seeing as you went to 5 Drs before you found one you were happy with. Yes as you say it is my body and I don’t want to mess around and delay treatment for fear of offending her!

It’s complicated, I was sick and didn’t know what was wrong with me so I was using my holidays leave while I couldn’t work, work told me to contact my super and they would pay my wage while I couldn’t work, this dr filled in the paperwork for that and diagnosed my original condition (which has since changed) and does the progress reports monthly. Would be too complicated to change dr. Your advice is good though I will talk to my hr and ask for there advice on the situation.
