I just dont know

Recommended Posts

So about 6 months ago, I had what appeared to be an outbreak of herpes, a few days before the concerning spot appeared, I had sex with two people (One of those people would have been during the outbreak). I let both of those people know and they went and got tested and their tests came back negative.

My test came back negative and then I got what seemed to be another outbreak the week after my results came back; the first one was an open sore type lesion that looked like a canker sore, and other was a small cluster (about 3 or 4) of itchy fluid filled bumps.

The doctor who looked at my outbreak and who had received my blood test and she told me that she wasn't convinced that it was herpes, but wanted me to continue to act like I had them. I talked with another doctor who accessed my file from the other doctor and she said "Well the other doctor is a specialist in genitals and diseases that effect them, shes not overly convinced that its herpes and based off what you have told me, I'm not convinced either." I asked her if I should still continue to act like I have herpes and the answer I got was "Yes". I had blood work done again this week to see if I have it and have not gotten the results, but my question is: If the results are negative again, should I continue to act like I have it? should I even continue to tell people that there might be a risk involved in having sex with me if the two people who I had sex with when I should have been contagious had negative results, and I have two doctors saying "no" and two results saying no?

Sounds like a frustrating situation.

You should probably just refrain from being sexual until you get either a definite answer and the sores subside and don't return.

Are they just going by blood tests or taking fluid from the blisters themselves? I understand the blood tests aren't always conclusive, where the fluid is.

Its been at least 5 months since I had any symptoms.

They are just going by the blood tests and what I have described to them.

If you saw her when you had lesions was she at least bright enough to take a swab?

Nine times out of 10 a false negative blood test will come back for genital herpes... (so I've heard) She should have taken a swab of your sore and had it analyzed if she didn't think it was herpes. If you do have herpes you should be on anti virals to keep your outbreaks at a minimum.

Have you done any googling about Herpes? If you haven't you should really educate yourself on this subject because even when you don't have sores, you could transmit through what they have termed "shedding." I really am having a hard time understanding why your doctor wouldn't take a swab (if she didn't)

Can I ask what she told you to do when she said "act like you have it?" Did she take test for HSV-1 and HSV-2? What did she think the sores were if she didn't think it was herpes?

The lesion had healed, it had no fluid but you could tell that there had been something there.

By act like I have it, I think she just meant be protected and be wary of symptoms.

I think you should follow medical advice, not advice from people on a forum who are not doctors. Perhaps a visit to a third doctor would be a good idea. I sure would want to know your situation so perhaps you should not be having sex with anyone for a while longer.

I wasn't going to take everyone's word on this, but I wanted something for a reference point in my mind to ease my anxieties about this, the possibility of having herpes is really weighing heavily on me. Like even if 12 people were like "You probably don't have it, doctors know best" I would still act like I have it.

Now that you say that, maybe it was just a friction burn or something?

Do what Mel in post No. 4 suggests and if you get another sore(s) go when they are active (not dried up) so a doctor can actually see them and take a swab.

Thats whats throwing me off, because everything I have read has told me that herpes starts as the cluster of itchy bumps that then becomes a sore, but mine was a sore without the itchy bumps and then once the sore had healed and a few days had passed, the itchy bumps formed and no sore followed.
