Why do men act interested in a girl when they're not?

Some people like to flirt with no intention of following through. It serves as an ego booster for them. A confirmation that "they still got it". Sounds like he was one of those.

Or you may have misunderstood what was meant to be simple friendly behaviour.

I just wanted to say - good for you for working up the nerve to tell him you like him! You have to take chances in love to get what you want... At least now you know and you can move on rather than keep wondering.

You win some, you lose some. Don't worry about it and don't let yourself get jaded over it. It happens.

It's not just men. People, in general, tend to give mixed signals sometimes for various reasons.

Well put. You will never know unless you take a shot! Take the chance or risk regretting that you never did.

Props to you for getting yourself out there; especially for breaking from the mold and indicating interest as the girl. Fantastic stuff.

With some people, it appears they like to keep their distance but match what you are giving them. So in this case, you might have flirted, and he showed it back (out of conversational niceness or desire to flirt), because there is nothing wrong with that. When you crossed the line he set for himself, he told you. It's just he wasn't interested in you like that is all. No harm, no foul, keep doing what you are doing and get back out there to find someone new!
