    I'm sorry about all this work and stress and you seem so on top of everything!! I'm really sorry to ask - I should know -which accident caused this?

    It happened in December of last year. I mentioned it very briefly in my other journal, but I don't think I actually explained what happened: a guy drove into the side of my car. He had been stopped at a stop sign but clearly wasn't paying attention. It was pretty ridiculous. But I didn't feel injured, so I thought nothing of it at the time.

    I had my first cervical epidural this morning. They knocked me out and injected steroids into my neck. So far, so good.

    I think the cervical epidural has made an improvement. I'm afraid to believe it or (even say it (lest I jinx it)), but the pain in my neck/shoulder area has diminished a lot.

    My low back is still pretty painful, but I didn't have any special treatments there yet. Supposedly, a lumbar epidural isn't as effective as a cervical epidural. I only have one herniated disc in my lower back, so I think I may be able to manage the pain through exercise. But one thing at a time.

    I don't think I ever summed up my visit to the pain management specialist. Basically, in addition to the disc herniations, my back has a bunch of sprains in it. I learned that sprains can have trouble healing because tendons and ligaments receive limited blood flow. Sometimes they only heal partially, as appears to be the case with my back.

    Funnily enough, I always wanted to sprain something as a kid. I really wanted to walk around with a limp for some reason. But for all my shenanigans I never managed to come away with more than a bruise or a cut. I was just too damned resilient.

    I finally got my wish and sprained an ankle when I was in my early 20s. I remember the difficulty I had in getting it to heal. The doctor told me to rest it, ice it, and take anti-inflammatory drugs, like Naproxen, Advil, Motrin, etc. I followed the doctor's orders, but my ankle remained tender and slightly swollen several months later. I could even feel a nodule on the tendon.

    Since the doctor's advice wasn't working, I went to a physical therapist. She laughed at me for saying "hyperdorsilate" instead of "hyperdorsiflex." Then she gave me a couple of exercises to do every night. After just a couple of weeks, the pain and swelling disappeared. I kept doing the exercises until the nodule disappeared as well. I can't even remember which ankle it was on.

    After that, I became a firm believer in using exercise to heal injury. Also around that time, I read an article in which an elderly man actually healed a condition in his legs simply by walking. The walking caused his circulatory system to build more capillaries in his calves, which were not receiving enough blood flow.

    I write about all of this because on Friday I'm about to undergo a treatment called prolotherapy. This is where a doctor injects dextrose into your tendons and ligaments to create inflammation and thus stimulate blood flow. The idea is that this will help to heal the sprains in my back. Prolotherapy is somewhat controversial--not because it is dangerous, but because it doesn't involve traditional drugs and because some say that studies on its effectiveness have produced mixed results.

    I'm going to give it a try anyway.

    In the meantime, I've been committing to more exercise. I've been trying to get out for an evening walk daily. I'd like to start yoga as well. However, I want to first see how things pan out with the lawsuit against my gym. I finally mailed the complaint last week. It would be really nice if they just settled. But if I have to go in and fight them, I will. I had to stand in front of a judge before to defend myself in traffic court. I think I'm pretty good in those situations.

    You have such a great attitude! Loved the limping story. I wanted braces so badly (on my teeth). What was I thinking???
