"feeling sorry for yourself" vs "feeling sorrowful"

For me, both of them are natural feelings of grief except with "feeling sorry for yourself" is unhealthy feeling where I just dwell on the unhappiness and how unfair life is and I never move on whereas "feeling sorrowful" is healthy in that I recognize that the unhappiness and feel it, but I also realize that it may not always be like this and will eventually move on.

I think sorrow can be for another person, or sorrow can be for oneself. Sorrow for oneself is often looked down on, as it seems self-indulgent.

I have always disliked this distinction. It's just very judgmental. If I feel sorrow for another, it's kind. If I feel sorry for myself, I'm wallowing in self-pity? Sorrow is sorrow. Whether we are sorrowful for ourselves or another, it's grief over loss. None of it should be belittled.

One can get stuck in either one, but they should both be treated with compassion and understanding.
