My knee gets burning up hot....What the hell??

Recommended Posts

Ok I know that I'm about to sound like a hypochondriac lol but I swear, this has been happening for a long while now, and I'm really starting to wonder what's going on.

It used to be that both of my knees will randomly get BURNING up hot and very very red. It doesn't hurt or anything, it just gets red. It's like all the blood is rushing to my knees or something. Lately, it's just been my left knee...

....Has anyone else experienced this or know what could be going on? Probably not, cuz it's totally random, but I thought I'd ask.

Woah, arthritis? I sure hope not. I'm 20 lol way too young for all of that. Hmm...I have no idea what arthritis feels like, but my right knee has been bothering me for at least 2 years now. Just a dull pain that's annoying when I'm walking around, going up steps, swimming, and dancing ballet.

And coldplay, it's hard to say exactly when it happens. Totally randomly, it seems. I'll have to tune into when it happens more. I notice it in the evening, but I think that's just because I'm not totally focused on class, studying, work, or whatever; I'm at home and sitting around and actually notice the things going on with my body. It also seems to happen pretty frequently after I swim laps.

I've never noticed swelling. I just looked at it and compared to my other knee, and it's difficult to tell, because it's just so red--which looks bad, but it doesn't actually look like it's swollen. Perhaps a tiny bit, but nothing noticeable.

This happens to me ALL of the time. I think my years of playing hockey are finally catching up to me. After any sort of workout where my knees are involved I'll instantly get swelling and they get SUPER hot. And my knees make crazy amounts of noise when moving them (especially walking down stairs). They can also get hot and swolen at random times too. I've tried looking into it, doing the physical therapy, but nothing has helped me. Docs have said the only thing that will help me is if I get surgery but I'd rather not as that will put me down for months.

Is there swelling on that knee? I've had bursitis, or "water on the knee" from when I unceremoniously landed on my knees after toppling off a horse while jumping (long story) and there was localized swelling and warmth, but it was due to trauma and it lasted about a year. I also had a ripped iliotibial band in the same knee, which is the connective tissue from the knee to the hip, due to carrying too much weight up a mountain. Both times, the heat and swelling was due to injury of some kind. So is your issue on a knee that was previously injured, or is this just a random heat with no swelling? I would think that any increase in temperature without injury would b due to increase in blood flow for some reason. I know that pre-arthritic people can get warmth in joints without necessarily experiencing swelling or pain, just due to a change in weather, or a low pressure system going by. Let us know. I'm curious!

Surgery? Yikes. It's annoying, but it ain't that annoying lol if it ever gets to be physically unbearable, it's something I would consider doing.

I am a big time ballet dancer, do you think that could have anything to do with it? Although, I don't even dance hardly ever anymore (hence the lap swimming) since I'm away at school, but I danced ballet for several hours 6 days a week for 10 years. Any chance this could be a result from that? Or are you saying that the problem was already there, and your hockey just pissed it off?

That could be it.......knees are not meant to be held at odd angles for extended periods of time. They are also the weakest joint in the body. Repetitive strain can really do a number on joints.

Also too arthritis is not just an old person's disease. I have had it since I was 9. I have 3 fingers on my writing hand that are permentantly crippled from trauma and arthritis.

No ma'am, no major injuries to either of my knees. And as for the swelling, see my above post for details. But in short, no, there is not noticeable swelling. Just red and steaming hot as to where I have to put a cool washcloth on to try and bring it back down to a somewhat normal temperature. Even when I hold my hand over my knee, I can feel a ton of heat rising off of it.

I had no idea other people experienced this! Good to know I'm not just paranoid and insane lol.

Wow, really? I'm terribly sorry to hear that. Do you think this is something I should get a doctor's opinion on? I definitely don't want to cripple anything.

My problem seems to be genetic, where the tendons that run on the outside of the knee down the length of the shin are pulling my kneecap towards the outside of my legs. Physical therapy tried to counteract this by strengthening the inside muscles running down my lower leg. But it either didn't work or I didn't give it enough time. I would try to get an MRI to see what's up with your knee. And go to a specialist.

Ya, any kind of fluid or water on the knee would be very noticeably visually, and if not to the touch.

How bout foot problems, are your archs flat, anything, wear heels, on your feet all day ect. Most problems start there and radiate up... My flat feet have caused knee, now moving into lower back issues.. so i know allllll about it.

Ballet is very hard on the knees. I danced ballet and other forms of dance daily, 8-10 hours a week, for almost 10 years (I still dance from time to time) and I have horrible knees now. I am currently trying to treat tendinitis in both knees and it's quite the headache. I've never had the heating sensation or redness you're describing, but it could very well be related to dancing. I would go see a doctor that specializes in sports medicine. It could be any one of the things people have mentioned here, but seeing a doctor the only surefire way to find out. I don't think this is something you want leave untreated.

Ok, so I have a slight update, if anyone happens to be subscribed and wants to chime in on some opinions. I have taken notice that it happens after I'm finished with my shower....random, I know...I mean it's not like I'm doing workouts in there lol but anyway, I took a pic yesterday evening after my shower to show you. Please just disregard the scars (the one above my right knee, and the one directly on my left knee). I know, I look like I have guys legs lol but I bruise like a peach and have a couple of battle wounds.

And also, this was on a very mild evening. So it's nothing too harsh or even noticeable, but I thought I'd post a pic since y'all seem to have a lot of knowledge about what this could possibly be.

EDIT: Grrr damn. The attachments aren't working....weird. I'll have to try later. Sorry yall.

I have had the same burning, redness and heat in both knees, no swelling. I spoke to my doctor about it and he said it was neuropathy, which is the inflammation of the nerves. I have had problems with Rheumatoid Arthritis but my Rheumatologist said that I now may have more of a problem with Fibromyalgia. Never had any problems until I turned 55 and it just showed up. Be grateful if you are healthy now, this kind of disease just shows up all of a sudden. If they go to the system being talked about we may all be in trouble.Quality-Adjusted-Life-Years protocol under Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel's Complete Lives System. ... QALY Obamacare "Impact. Google it.

I also have this. For me, it occurs after I've tried to work out (when i used to be able to) now its when ive been standing for an hour or more and also late at night when I'm laying in bed, resting. I'm 19. And I have a lot of other various medical issues, like idiopathic intracranial hypertension, supposed fibromyalgia (maybe), and various skin things idk what they are. Doctors don't really know what's wrong with me, so they sent me to physical therapy and gave me cyclobenzaprene. If you find out a cause to this mystery besides arthritis (since I tested negative for it) I'd be very interested in knowing what it might be!
