Most powerful songs?

Recommended Posts

i know this type of post has been done over and over again on this and every forum on the web, but for the sake of us ENA newbs and music freaks, i thought it might be time to do it again. i'd like to avoid listing the songs that we associate with a particular ex, or the cd's that were playing when our cars went off the road and hit a tree (too painful!) and there was already a recent thread about what to listen to during sex. what i'm referring to here are the lyrics, melodies and overall musical moods which, strictly on their own, bring out something deep inside you; the ones that stir the most emotion (happy, sad or whatever) in your soul.

one mp3 that i play a lot when i'm depressed (and usually makes me feel worse) is "Too Far Down", a quiet and seemingly out-of-character acoustic number by the Minneapolis hardcore punk-turned-alt rock trio Husker Du. here is a slice of the lyrics:

When I sit and think

I wish that I just could die

Or let someone else be happy

By setting my own self free

And you don't want the emotion

Because the taste it leaves is for real

But nothing's ever real until it's gone

And I might be too far down

Beck's "Lost Cause" seems to have the same effect on me. on the other side of the coin i get the completely opposite reaction from the Plain White T's pop/rock song "Happy Someday", which projects a comforting Utopian image:

Someday I'll have everything

I'll get paid money just to sing

A new car, and a big house

A few kids running around

I'm gonna marry my girlfriend

And fall in love all over again

Someday I'll have it all

then there are some tunes, like Weezer's "Hash Pipe", KoRn's "Twisted Transistor" and the groovalicious "Sunshine in a Bag" by the Gorillaz that just have an infectious, head-bobbing beat to them and won't let me sit still while they're playing.

there are hundreds of others that i'd mention if i had the time, but i'll pinch it off here and give other members a chance to name some of the songs them have the strongest effects on them.

Lean On Me by club Nouveau is a big one for me.

Kinetic by Osker

Mietzi's Song by Beatsteaks

New Slang by The Shins ("this song will change your life" from Garden State. Yes, yes it did)

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton (this is the first song I heard when my very first pet died, it's still quite powerful for me)

almost anything by Bush

And lots lots more. These are off the top of my head.

There are so many songs that have had a strong impact on me. Here's a few:

" Mary " by The Scizzorsisters

" The Drugs Don't Work " by The Verve

" The Scientist " by Coldplay

So many songs by U2: " Walk On ", " Stuck in a Moment ", " Sunday Bloody Sunday ", " One ", With or Without You ", " Where the Streets Have No Name ", " I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For "

" Seven Nation Army " by The White Stripes

" In Your Eyes " by Peter Gabriel

" Leaving New York " by REM

" Show Me Heaven " by Mariah McKee

" Hangin' By A Thread ", " Good Mother ", and " Unloved " by Jann Arden

" Chances Are " by Martina McBride and Bob Seiger

" Best of You " by The Foofighters

" Out of Reach " by Gabriel

" Run " and " Chocolate " by Snow Patrol

" Cannonball " by Damien Rice

" Video " by India Arie

" Hurt " by Johnny Cash

" This Woman's Work " by Kate Bush

" Selling the Drama " and " Heaven " by Live

The song that has really affected me in my life is " The Last

Song " by Elton John. I normally hate Elton John but this song makes me cry because it's the words of a boy whose on his deathbed, dying of AIDS, to his father. I first heard it in a movie about the history of AIDS and it always stuck with me. These are the lyrics:

Yesterday you came to lift me up

As light as straw and brittle as a bird

Today I weigh less than a shadow on the wall

Just one more whisper of a voice unheard

Tomorrow leave the windows open

As fear grows please hold me in your arms

Won't you help me if you can to shake this anger

I need your gentle hands to keep me calm

`Cause I never thought I'd lose

I only thought I'd win

I never dreamed I'd feel

This fire beneath my skin

I can't believe you love me

I never thought you'd come

I guess I misjudged love

Between a father and his son

Things we never said come together

The hidden truth no longer haunting me

Tonight we touched on the things that were never spoken

That kind of understanding sets me free

Great thread.

timely, i just posted this in "Healing After Break Up or Divorce - Good Lyrics to Heal to"

Tomorrow is a Long Time

cover by Ian Tyson and Sylvia Fricker (written by Bob Dylan)

If today was not an endless highway,

If tonight was not a crooked trail,

If tomorrow wasn't such a long time,

Then lonesome would mean nothing to me at all.

Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin',

And if I could hear her heart a-softly poundin',

Only if she was lyin' by me,

And I'd lie in my bed once again.

I can't see my reflection in the water,

I can't speak the sounds that know no pain,

I can't hear the echo of my footsteps,

I can't remember the sound of my own name.

Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin',

And if I could hear her heart a-softly poundin',

Only if she was lyin' by me,

And I'd lie in my bed once again.

There's beauty in the silver, singin' river,

There's beauty in the sunrise in the sky,

But none of these and nothing else can match the beauty

That I remember in my true love's eyes.

Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin',

And if I could hear her heart a-softly poundin',

Only if she was lyin' by me,

And I'd lie in my bed once again.

BENT! so glad you did this thread, want to talk about music!!

some of the songs that have had the most powerful effects on me are:

Scorpions, still loving you

Scorpions, no one like you

Any thing Scorps as they are my favorite group!

George Michael, 'Careless Whisper'

Mister Mister, 'Broken Wings'

(like tofu) Tears in Heaven, Clapton (Clapton's great)

Luthor Vandross...Dance With My Father, unfortunately i can relate to the lyrics pretty literally, and the first time i heard it i had to pull over cuz i couldn't see the road. Also the same is true about 'Cat's in the Cradle', and also Queensryche's 'Bridge'.

Perfect Circle....Passive...GREAT tune! Listning to it right now!

Papa Roach, Obsession....

i, like you, love Korn, do you remember 'counterfeit', how about 'clown', and also 'blind'. really those are just a few of my favorites of the many many good tunes that korn continues to throw out!!

have you heard Flypside, 'someday'?....pretty powerful...

ICP, yes i said ICP, 'how many times?'

Pantera, 'cemetery Gates'

Finger eleven, One Thing.

Steve Miller Band, 'Fly Like an Eagle' ...inspiring..

Leeann Womak, 'I Hope You Dance' *petlady also listed that

thanks, teddybear. i got the idea from a friend

i was more into indie/punk when the Scorps were on top but "Winds Of Change" gets under my skin sometimes, the same way that GNR's "Sweet Child Of Mine" and Iron And Wine's version of "Such Great Heights" can.

"Cat's In The Cradle", geez. that's like the epitome of emotion right there. same with Johnny's version of "Hurt" as cyberchick mentioned.

i wasn't familiar with Flypside's "Someday" but i just downloaded it (i mean, BOUGHT it, lol) and i must admit it's pretty tasty. i like that 'crossover' music, like the Gorillaz and such.

anything by these bands (off the pointy top of my head) gets me in a rockin' party mood:

KoRn

White Stripes

System Of A Down

Rob Zombie

Dead Kennedys

Ramones

Sublime

Beastie Boys

Social Distortion

Bad Religion

most Jet

most Placebo

and certain songs by other bands, like:

Pink Grease, "Fever"

Eagles Of Death Metal, "S*** Goddamn"

Powerman 5000, "Bombshell" and "When Worlds Collide"

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, "Black Tongue"

Ice T/Body Count's "Cop Killer" (you heard me!)

Seether, "F*** It"

Saliva, "Click Click Boom"

the Hives, "Two-Timing Touch And Broken Bones"

Morphine, "Honey White"

Arctic Monkeys, "You Look Good (On The Dance Floor)"

"Sort It Out" by Caesar's Palace gets my body moving, yet it depresses me at the same time:

I wanna smoke crack

'cause you're never comin back

i wanna shoot speedballs

bang my head against the walls

i wanna sniff glue

'cause i can't get over you

how'm i gonna sort it out?

how'm i gonna sort it out?

and Dashboard Confessional's "Vindicated" makes the hair on my arms stand up:

Defense is paper thin

Just one touch and I'll be in

Too deep now to ever swim against the current

So let me slip away

So let me slip away

So let me slip away

So let me slip against the current

So let me slip away (etc.)

then there's Weezer's "Only In Dreams", The Eels' "Novocaine For The Soul" The Cure's "Pictures Of You" and Radiohead's "There There" and "High And Dry", all of which can make me feel alone and get my throat a little lumpy-ish.

deepest soundtrack ever: gotta be Garden State. orgasmictofu reminded me about that when she brought up "New Slang".

just don't say anything bad about Nirvana because you WILL be crossing my line, lol.

yes, and no worries...i don't tend to get too 'clique-ish' about my music, i love it all...

so..here are a couple of soundtrack recommendations, if you haven't already got them...each one of these is excellent....

'o brother where art thou?'

'jesus christ super star'

'smoke signals' of particular interest here is an artist named jim boyd, two songs, 'father and farther', and 'a million miles away'

...happy listening...

Really bendah - My tastes are so all accross the board...

Favorite band - Forgone Conclusion

But favorite song of all times, totally tongue in cheek - David Brent (Ricky Gervais) singing a cover of If You Don't Know Me by Now (simply red)

You gotta have Cher! C'mon. Why isn't she a part of anyone's list on here? I LOVE Cher. "Do You Believe In Life after Love?", a perfect song for any depressing mood. And, I love listening to her song whenever I hit the cycling class at the gym (which isn't too often, I know, but her song totally pumps me up!).

Nice Topic!

hey bent, bet she's a really smart friend!
she must be, this thread is a kick!

hey if you're into the basic crossover genre, you also might look into 'South Park Mexicans, aka, SPM'....it's kind cool...kinda like pizza none really too bad, like a few other things so i'm told...
huh? oh.

and as always 'Insane Clown Posse, aka, ICP', though i'm sure some might find that difficult to listen to. seems like you can probably handle it though..
i can do SPM. not a Juggalo, though. <:>

but ya gotta admire a guy who's man enough to wear makeup!

'o brother where art thou?'

ha ha, i came THISCLOSE to mentioning "Man Of Constant Sorrow" in my earlier post. You likes the old blueses/torch songs? Billie Holiday's take on "Gloomy Sunday" is TOO good. makes me wanna run right out and jump off a bridge.

'jesus christ super star'

good stuff. used to sing it when i was delivering papers as a tadpole. i also saw the Broadway play once at the Greek here in L.A. many moons ago, with that original guy... what was his name? you know, the one with the long hair...

don't know if you've seen Hedwig And The Angry Inch, but that one's got some hefty nuggets in it composed and sung by John Cameron Mitchell, the star/director/writer/producer/cameraman #3 & #4. "Wicked Little Town" (1st ver.) comes to mind.

'smoke signals' of particular interest here is an artist named jim boyd, two songs, 'father and farther', and 'a million miles away'
i'm all over it. thanks a pantsload for the tips!

...hissy lappening...

Don't ever look back

Tunnel of Love by Dire Straits would be my Defining One, I think. It has, for me, anyway, a very "well ultimately it doesnt matter, everything keeps on turnin' anyway, just keep breathing" feel to it.

....Going crazy on the waltzers, but its the life that I choose...

In a screaming ring of faces

I see her standing in the light

She had a ticket for the races

Just like me she was a

Victim of the night...

Hey mister, gimme two, gimme two now

Cos any two can play..

I'm just high on the world...

bent, its ok if you've decided not to be a juggalo; i will see if i can get you a full pardon from the great milenko himself. lol..

and,

"huh? oh. "

um, like i said, i've 'heard'; i am, after all, a teddy bear!

i love jesus christ superstar, i've gone to numerous productions! oh, and that long haired guy, i think his name was Jesus. hehe

Billy Jean, you've gotta give cher her props, she's a veteran!

i've gotta do some serious listening monday!

oooh, i want to add two more to the list...Offspring, Gone Away!

and....'Audioslave, I Am The Highway', which is about identity and self empowerment.

my thread lives! pet, i'll have to reacquaint myself with those two. teddybear, that was Johnny Nash, and it can be found on the Grosse Pointe Blank soundtrack, another gem worthy of mention. good stuff:

i think i can make it now, the pain is gone

all of the bad feelings have disappeared

here is the rainbow i've been prayin' for

it's gonna be a bright (bright) bright (bright)

sunshiny day

speaking of older songs, Foghat's "I Just Want To Make Love To You" was kicking around in my head this morning. some of you older people out there might remember:

I don't want you, keep my home,

I don't want you, wash my clothes,

I don't want you to be true,

I just wanna make love...

everybody, air guitars! wadda doomp wah, wee nee nee wadadaa
