A friend of mine recently posted in one of my Facebook groups that she feels guilty when she reads novels instead of self help books. She wrote that reading novels is "fun" and escapist and she makes herself read self help books for self improvement. She is my age (50s). So I was really surprised at this interpretation. I've read many self help books over the last 40 years and I'm really selective about what I read because I find so many to be unhelpful or worse. But -fiction -especially novels - sure I read some for fun - chick lit, light and fluffy novels ,etc. But when they are literary and/or classics -I personally learn so much about so many things -someti…

Reading through the many posts, queries and replies on the forum I feel it might be an idea to have a "recommended books/reading" thread. I cannot recommend too highly "Stalking the Soul" by Dr. Marie-France Hirigoyen Then there is "The Myth of Sanity" by Dr. Martha Stout, and her earlier book "The Psychopath next Door". and "Stop Walking on Eggshells" Paul T. Mason

Do you have book passages, quotes, poems that left their mark on you, speak to you, do you perhaps even use them as a mantra or orientation in life? Perhaps you just..like them? Well, I have tons and tons and I never seem to get enough and have the same curiosity drive me in the inquiry about yours as some women have for "what's in your handbag" pins. It's an obsession of mine almost. If you have bits of literature you'd like to share I bet some of us bookworms would love to read them. If possible, try to add the authors name or a book title for those who might be interested in reading more. Happy posting- and reading

Hey ya’ll! Hope everyone is well with what’s going on with, y’know, THE VIRUS! I don’t mean to be sarcastic or disrespectful, but I am officially through with being so depressingly serious for so long I must release some cheeky humour into my life again! Bit of background to my trivial debate! I want your opinion on this, fellow readers, book lovers, fans of the written word! I adore books - always have done and always will! Always wanted to be part of a book club. I imagined a group of kindered weirdos like myself, from all different walks of life, like this secret societal underground meeting (kinda gonna be underground when the lockdown lifts because I am h…

By a show of hands (or, in this case, online responses), which genre do you prefer? Are you most engaged by fiction books, or are you partial to the non-fiction variety? I fall into the latter group. Give me a book on psychology or history and you'll find me engrossed for hours on end. Those happen to be my two favorite subjects. What about you guys?

I recently recommended this book on the Personal Development forum. I consider it one of the most inspirational books I have ever read. It’s amazing how, despite being denied education for so long, Tara (now Dr. Westover) not only survived but thrives. Why I would recommend this book: It can help people denied access to education/training in any capacity, it says “you are not alone” and “it’s not too late for you” It shows education for what it is, a privilege. It’s easy to forget that we are so privileged to have it (take it for granted). And, therefore, that being denied fair access to this privilege does not make you "bad," "stupid," or "beyond help." It’s not a s…

Hello everyone. I don't know if I'm posting this under the correct topic but I really need help. I'm doing a presentation and essay on the life and times of William Shakespeare. I really want to start both pieces with a quote from him but I don't know how to continue the sentence after the quote. I want to add the element of mystery before I elaborate on his life. Please help. If I am on the wrong website please recommend one that would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone, What are your favorite comic books and what do you like about them? Are you a seasoned DC fanatic? Or maybe you prefer Marvel comics. Or both... Geez, I wonder what a mint condition X-Men #1 is going for these days. I myself have always liked Superboy and the Legion of Super Heroes. You know, in the 30th century... Mon-El, Matter Eater Lad, Saturn Girl, Chamelion Boy and of course his proto-plasmic pet Proty. (The brains of the outfit.) What is the best graphic novel you have ever read and why? I still like my 12 cent DC the best. Also, the corney old ads crack me up... (Working Submarine Just $2.98! ) It is…

Hi, some of you may have seen, I posted yesterday following a 9 yr relationship breaking. So following some advice, it’s time to develop myself, and be the best version of myself. Any advice on books or audiobooks as I have an audible membership would be great 👍. I also want to get my health to the best it can be and my diet. I’m 35 and ready for a kick in the right direction 😀. Thanks for your help

Hi there, So many book recommendations out there, and also so many books I've read and not related to. I'm interested to here what books people turn to when they need to get out of depression. It doesn't have to be a book about getting out of depression! I just looking for the things that really work. Many thanks

I read this book a couple of years ago, and would like to read it again and some if her other books. Interestingly, I noticed her work is treated more respectfully since she died. Has anyone read any of her work or seen her films?

Hey everyone! I read a funny book a few years ago. I think it's at least partially non-fiction. At the end of the book, the protagonist shows his "girlfriend" the paperwork for his vasectomy after she fakes a pregnancy to get him to stay. Has anyone read this book? Thanks!
