How Can I Save My Relationship With An Emotionally Distancing Boyfriend?

Dear eNotAlone: My boyfriend and I have been together for two years, and things are starting to go wrong. He always seemed to be so understanding and loving towards me, however lately he has been distant and ignoring my calls. I try to talk to him about how I'm feeling, but he just shrugs it off. We used to talk about our emotions, but now it feels like he avoids them. I don't know what to do and I'm afraid that if I don't get the help I need our relationship will end.

Falling out of love can be a difficult and frustrating experience, especially if you still care deeply for your partner. It's normal to feel overwhelmed, helpless and scared when your relationship is not going in the direction you want it to. If you're feeling like your boyfriend is emotionally distancing himself from you, it can be hard to know how to fix the situation.

The first step to regaining closeness with your partner is to recognize the signs of an emotionally distant partner. Do you feel that your partner is not listening to your problems, avoids discussing his own emotions, or is not as responsive to your needs anymore? These can all be indicators that your partner is turning away from you and the relationship.

If you are truly committed to saving your relationship, you must give it your best effort. Sitting around and waiting for things to improve will not help the situation, and instead you must make meaningful changes if your relationship is to stand a chance at being rekindled.

First, start a dialogue with your boyfriend about what's going on in your relationship. It's important to talk openly and honestly about your feelings so that your partner understands what's happening. When he begins to express his emotions, it's important to hear him out and try your best to understand. Show him that you're willing to listen, and don't be afraid to ask your partner questions. If there are issues that need to be addressed, now is the time to talk about them.

You also need to work on rebuilding the trust that has been lost between you two. Trust is essential for a strong relationship, so it's important to take steps to earn back that trust. Try to be honest and open with your partner, and be patient when they're trying to express their feelings. Let your boyfriend know that you're willing to forgive past mistakes and start anew.

In addition to talking to your boyfriend, make sure that you're taking time for yourself too. Have some ‘me time' and spend time with friends, family and activities that make you happy. Also, try to be understanding of your partner's emotional state, as it is just as important as your own.

Understand that the healing process will take time and effort. If you both continue to make an effort and are open to communication, then it's possible to salvage your relationship. However, if after giving it your best shot things still don't improve, it's time to consider whether or not the relationship is worth saving.
