Fleeting Moments of Random Happiness

Has anyone ever felt a sense of happiness that just comes out of nowhere and is completely unexpected, but as soon as it comes it just vanishes?

For instance:

I remember a while back when I was on the train heading home there was an infant crying, and while most people in the car were showing some sense of discomfort I felt an odd sense of joy, almost comforting.

But within 5 minutes it just dissipated.

So am I off my rocker, or does this happen to anyone else?

I think its just happy comforting moments where you feel at peace for a few minutes.

I love those moments. I have them too. They don't always last long, but they arise in surprisingly 'simple' circumstances. It can simply be when I sit at home after a long day, with a cup of fresh hot tea, a book, music and when my cat jumps on my lap. I will feel 'ah, everything is in place now, and I am exactly where I want to be'. For a moment, I forget that I have stress at work, deadlines, struggles with relatives sometimes, etc.

I'd cherish these moments!

Yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about. Used to happen to me a lot, still does, a bit less lately cuz I'm very troubled lol. I can't begin to write all the times it has happened, it's too many! A certain movement, nature, a nice chat with a friend, the sun sparkling on the sea, a song, the city lights..so many. I got it today while looking at the sun through a glass of water.

oh this happens to me! I have been really down at the moment with uni application stuff and stress and my parents beliving if they tell me to 'cheer up' it will solve it. I had one of these feelings today from just thinking about having a few more hours in the day and a cup of tea! its almost like they are a chemical release as as soon as they come they are gone! I wish I could turn them on all the time....

It sounds like you enjoyed a quick confirmation about being alive. So lovely.

There are special places that I spiritually connect to, when there. One place is a long drive away, where it used to be an old indian burial site. There's a wide river in the middle and sheer, sandy cliffs on the opposite bank. A myriad of birds fly through this area, where it's a normal occurence, to see osprey, kingfishers, magpies, bald eagles, hawks, herons, sparrows and a million different finches, flying around. You cannot be anything but happy and content, when listening to the river meandering by, birdsong and grasshoppers, creating symphonies.

I totally get these. They're the only time I am truly happy. Tolle talks about it in Power of Now. I think these moments occur when our thinking mind short circuits and turns off for a few seconds, and we experience simply being.

Wow. Thought it was just something that "normal" people felt that I only had a glimpse of now and then.

I know what you're talking about and I get these feelings but they are very infrequent and, as you say, they don't last very long. They happen like some of the other folks say in just simple, 'unimportant' moments where I just get this sense of peace and happiness and feeling great to be alive and as if all will be fine and all the 'problems' I think I have are all very minimal.

Wish I had them more often.

I get those sometimes, very randomly. I was walking back to my car the other day and something about the way the sky looked and how the wind was blowing I just felt a fleeting sense of joy and freedom. Another time was when I was walking dogs in the bush (forest) and it sometimes happens when I'm really contented with a book or something.
