What do you mean exactly by "tone up"? Do you want to lose fat and gain muscle? If so, then you'll probably also end up losing weight along the way.

For working out, it's usually recommended you do about 45 minutes of cardio 3 times a week. You might also want to look into lifting some weights too.

Pilates will work too, but I'd probably look into seeing whether or not they have a program that's a bit longer, but which you can do less frequently (ie: 3 x a week).

you will more than likely need more than pilates. in order to look toned, you will need to lose weight.

Pilates, if done properly, will not only make you look toned but will improve your posture and balance - and enhance your appearance over all. It's worth getting an instructor for 1:1 sessions in the early days, to ensure your placement is correct and you understand the finer points of the exercises.

To an extent it will depend on your body type, but you can start with Pilates sessions of at least one hour, three or four times a week for about six - eight weeks and see how you're doing. Eventually you can get to a stage where you're maintaining your figure rather than altering it, in which case around 20 - 30 mins a day should do fine. At least that's been my experience.

Pilates is very good at giving you the 'best version of the figure you've already got'.

okay no..

tone up = lose fat, gain muscle.

to lose fat, do cardio. 20 min or less. if you can do more than 20 min, your cardio is not intense enough.

to gain muscle, lift heavy... don't lift little weights... that'll do nothing for you. high rep/low weights will increase your endurance level... ok fine, but won't help you achieve your goal (as quickly and efficiently).

eat clean.. that's the most important part...

pilates is not going to make you lose any fat... and it def will not build any muscle.. it'll strengthen them.. but not make them any bigger... it's fun to do though.
