Money matters- is this going to work out?

Hi guys,

I just need some general advice or opinions about something.

I'm moving in with my boyfriend this coming September into his house. Before this, I've always been living under my parent's roof -I'm 21-. It's a massive step for me as well as for him because like me, even though he purchased his own house at the age of 19, he's been living with his parents until the age of 23 (now).

Okay, he works full time and hence, have more than enough to cover his weekly mortgage fees + food + bills. I on the other hand, completed my degree end of last year and am now working 20hours a week only. My hourly rate is not that great either.

Now, my concern is that the location of his house is actually 17.1km away from my work place. I don't own a car yet (I'm purchasing one soon) but am afraid that travelling 34.2km back and forth 5 days a weeks is going to blow my budget. That, and also because I don't work during school holidays as I work only during school term (I work in a school) so there comes to a time when I won't have any income.

He said I don't have to pay towards mortgage -or rent- but foot the other bills + food. I don't know whether I am in the best financial position to do that comfortably yet...

So, what would you guys do? Will you move out if you work 20h a week? Having to travel 34.2km back and forth to work from your new house? I've thought about getting another part time job, but they will tax me like crazy so there's no point.

Just wondering, there are no other safe transporation options? bus? bike? roller-blades? K, that's about 10+ miles... maybe not roller blades.

Other than that, weigh the options... guage how much you'll be paying for food, how much to buy a cheap car, how much to cover the gas monthly(and repairs) and then compare it to where you're at now. Just make sure you add the whole picture... every expense matters.

I've lived with just one other person working just 20 hours a week. But let me tell you, it was TOUGH. My parents supplied most of my groceries and helped out with my car payment. And as far as gas went (I had a pretty significant drive to work as well), I had to pick and choose where I drove for "fun" activities because the priority was getting to work.

If you're really concerned about it, I'd suggest waiting until you're either working a few more hours a week or getting a better hourly pay. That way, when you DO move out, you can actually enjoy it.

Moving from parents to with boyfriend will be a hard change.

Can you try living on your own for a while? It's a good life experience, having your own things, and your own place, and your own bills with no help.

Or else you'll just go from being a dependent on your family to a semi-dependent on your boyfriend. A roommate works well too.

Just a suggestion.

Yeap. I've done that. Okay, purchasing a car won't be a hassle as I've put some money aside since I started working at 17 to purchase a second hand car. I have a separate saving for that. I'm thinking somewhere between 1.3- 1.7cc so it's EXTREMELY economical 'used only to travel to work'. And apparently, my not so supportive dad said it usually costs about 80 bucks to fill a car up and it'll last probably about 1 or 2 weeks. My SO thinks otherwise. I think my dad is exagerrating. As for maintenance, my SO works in that area so I'll get free maintenance. That's a bonus I suppose.

Food for two people.. oh my gosh.. how much can two people eat??? I'm thinking maybe 100bucks on weekly groceries? Does that sound reasonable??

And nooo, if I use public transportation that's going to cost me a limb! And I want to keep mine. I'm going to rethink about this. When I try to work things out, I always leave some important elements out so the figure will appeare lower...

Oh no! Did you work though? Was that the sole income of the household? Yeah, I've thought about that.... but I'm quite adamant in making things work. If there's a will, there's a way...or so I hope

Hmmm, this thought never occured to me because I've been going out with my SO for over 3 years now and the first time I thought about moving out, I had him in my mind. So I think this idea of relocating was really triggered by him. It's a thought though, thanks!

Yes, I did work, about the same amount as you...and the person I was living with split all expenses with me 50/50.

I would not put myself in a position where I need to rely on his income to make it.
The only exception is if you have some considerable savings you can "leech" off of, even if you make a loss on a weekly basis.

I would wait until you get a better job or figure better transportation arrangements otherwise. This way you can save a considerable amount just living at your parents at least and then make the move.
