Too skinny.. What foods are good for weight gain?

I'm really disgusted with my body.. I've always been a rather scrawny little guy. I'm about 6'1 weighing 145 lbs. Pretty small for a guy. I really just want to get a little more leaner in body weight. I specifically want bigger arms and a better chest with abs. I can't afford a gym at the moment until I can find me a job to pay for gym membership.. In the meanwhile I'm going to have to work with what I got at home. I have a weight bench.. 15 lb & 25 lb dumbbells.

What exercises are good for gaining strength muscles and are good for gaining more body mass. What type of foods should I be eating daily and what are the best kinds of foods to eat for someone who's trying to put on weight. It's odd, I eat a lot but I never seem to gain weight anyway..

I'm just confused on what to do to get started and what my exercises should consist of from starting out..

leaner is not what you should be shooting for. you want more muscle, not leanness. eat everything and anything you can get your hands on and work out hard. it's the only way.

Protein, protein, protein. Start drinking whey protein shakes if you have to. Of course, too much protein is bad, so don't go too crazy. Basically, do what ghost said and eat non-stop. Since you can't afford a gym membership right now, just make sure you're getting in at LEAST 3 hours a week of working out--5 is best, more if you can. Run, bench press, lunges, anything. Just break a sweat and go until you really feel it. Just make sure you give whatever you worked out that day a nice 24 hour rest, otherwise the muscle tears won't heal and mend right and you'll just wind up hurting yourself.

I'm not an expert on bulking up, but eating a lot and working out a lot seem to be the formula.

Not sure what help I can be but I can give my advice. First is don't just eat anything and everything, eat a lot but do it healthily. Eat lots of good food, plenty of protein as was already mentioned. Try to consume high calories, but get it from stuff that is good for you. Bad food will not help you bulk up muscle, it will help add fat though, and that will cover any potential abs. You will need carbs to aide in energy and protein to help build the muscle. I spent years wrestling and cutting weight. I wrestled 125lbs from my senior year of high school through junior year of college. My metabolism is high and I am not too tall so my body type is not conducive to high amounts of muscle. However, through working out in my schools weight room and doing push ups, sit ups, and other exercises in my dorm I have been able to add some weight. At one point I thought all I need to do is work out some and eat everything I saw. Did that for 1/2 a year and gained weight but lost the 6 pack. Then I had to run off my protective cover before I went to the beach. Weight is a zero sum game. If you take in more calories than you burn it is added as weight, whether it is muscle or fat depends on your program. If you burn more than you consume you will loose weight. I would just recommend high calories of good food and work out. Also, check and see approximately how many calories you are burning working out to gauge how many you need to consume. Oftentimes, you don't burn as many calories as you may think.

Also, be consistent in your workout and dedicate 30-45 minutes 5 times a week, alternating upper and lower body, always work the mid section like abs and back.

I used to be 5'11 148 lbs with no muscle definition.
After a long term girlfriend dumped me, I started to feel pretty crappy about my body and decided to change it. Now I weigh 183 lbs and am very defined and strong.

My point is that anyone can change their body if they try.

Unfortunately for you, you will not have much success changing your body until you get a gym membership. You need to be doing squats, bench press, and deadlifts in the gym several days a week, combined with eating tons of food (especially protein). This will get you what you want. You should really try to find the money for a gym membership.

I guess I should eat a good amount of Peanut butter sandwiches a day and drink a lot of milk as well. Milk seems to be a good source of protein and calories as well...

good advice. it has to be about balance. depends on what kind of strength you're going for. personally...i find vanity pretty lame. definition means nothing if you can't put it to practical use. practical means: endurance, flexibility, and strength...all working together. good to watch calories...but make sure you're getting a good balance of vitamins as well. bulk for the sake of bulk won't help you out in the long run. it's about being healthier in the end. can't stress the importance of cardiovascular activity either. again...it's all about balance.

you ever considered talking to a personal trainer...or a nutritionist? great to get some tips before you get too crazy.

Push ups will build up your biceps & chest muscles, and you can do them anywhere. Find a playground where you can do pullups but be careful not to look like you're stalking the kiddies. Do sit ups holding a weight across your chest to increase the resistance.

Don't eat really fatty stuff like fast food, and don't ONLY eat more but not hold up the exercise part. Better to be undefined & thin than undefined & chubby!
