Unhappy PCOS and weight loss

Hey everyone!

So I've been on the birth control pill Dianette for a few months after being diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome at the end of 2008.

After the getting over the madness it caused (weeping for no reason and basically being emotionally high strung) I am trying to lose the weight I have put on thanks to my messed up hormones.

So I have changed my diet, every thing I make is uber healthy and cooked from scratch (yay for my love of the kitchen) and I have started going to the gym 3 times a week.

The thing is, although I have been doing this for 3+ months I have actually gained a pound or two... not impressed. The other symptoms I have such as hirsuitism (excess hair, yes I have a moustache... and chin hair, and toes and knuckles, lol) and the skin problems brown patches under my bottom lip and greasiness, they are not goin away!!

I'm just so angry at how my body can turn on me like this, dammit!!

Anyhoo...

I was wondering if anyone is like this and/or has any tips to help, like workout tips or diet hints.

I'm so sick of being like this, if I can manage the weight problem (thanks testosterone and insulin resistance) the other symptoms are supposed to lessen and I would really, really, really like to just be happy in my own skin (and be a mother one day).

Thanks xx

Hey,
I have PCOS as well so I completely understand what you're going through!
Check out "The PCOS Diet Book" and "Living With PCOS"--They're both great books.

What does your typical daily diet look like? Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks? What kind of activity are you getting?

My diet
breakfast: 2 slices of toast or cereal and a cup of tea

lunch: sandwiches or soup with diluted juice or tea, with some fruit on the side

dinner: little bit of meat, veg and rice. usually oriental food, i love my wok, but I cook a range of types for me and my two flatmates.

snacks: lots of tea! (no sugar) and fruit.

Gym routine:
15 on the rowing machine - warmup
30 mins on the bicycle
30 mins on the crosstrainer
30 mins on the treadmill - cool down

Be careful with your carb intake. You want to avoid "white" carbs (white bread, pasta, potatoes, etc.) and go for whole wheat, high in fiber foods. With PCOS, you want to have a very high intake of fiber. I suggest the Fiber One products--they're really good. Barilla makes a whole-grain pasta that's really good too

I was diagnosed with PCOS a few years back. I had acne, cysts on my ovaries, insulin resistance and missed periods. I wasn't overweight, but I was heavier than I should have been given what I was eating. After being told that I couldn't do anything about it, but take Metformin (which is poison), I decided that I was going try and lose weight and see what happens.

I ended up losing 25 lbs in a year. It was unbelievably difficult. I would work out all the time and eat practically nothing. But now all my symptoms are gone! I'm still prone to gaining weight easily, but everything else is fine. I would encourage you to try your hardest. Once you get there you will feel so much better and hopefully lessen your symptoms.

25lbs in a year? god that's discouraging

You couldn't handle Metformin either? Oh man, it wreaked havoc on my insides.
