Lexapro users..

I just made a doctors appointment with my Primary Care Physician..regarding getting put back on anti-depressants. I was on prozac when I was about 15 and it made me even more depressed than I was before. I've heard LOTS of good things about lexapro. Only bad side effects..weight gain and extreme lack of sex drive. NO thank you. I've worked too hard to lose all my weight and I sure as heck don't want to lose my sex drive. The reason i'm wanting to go back on something is due to the fact that I get in these horrible almost 'psycho' moods. My relationship is suffering and I love him too much to do this to him anymore. I'm so thankful he's stuck with me through all the crazy b*tch moments I have. Bipolar disorder runs on both sides of my family and I think maybe I have a small case of that. =[ I get severely depressed for a max of an hour then I all of the sudden pop back into a good mood thinking "WHY the hell was I just acting like that..?" I know I need to speak with my doctor about this to be diagnosed but I was just wondering if anyone on here uses/has used lexapro?

I have used Lexapro in the past and now I'm using Celexa, which is basically an older version. Both of them greatly changed my sex drive to the point where it takes forever to have an orgasm and it's nowhere near as strong as it used to be.

I didn't gain any weight, but I watch my weight very carefully and if I notice it goes up, then I attribute it to my diet and exercise habits.

hey there, I used lexapro for a while. I did not notice any weight gain or loss of sex drive. I stopped taking it though and when I started back up again I realised that it had lost any affect on me. To the dragon lady, do you mind telling me why you started using Celexa? I need to start on antidepressants again and I was curious since Lexapro no longer does it for me.

For depression and anxiety. I've been on and off antidepressants for years, but I've decided that once this semester is over, I want to get off them for good. I'm trying to make some positive changes in my life and I hope they will help contribute to a better state of mental health.

I'm not sure what you mean by saying they "had lost any affect" on you. What were you taking them for? Did you just become depressed after a while of taking them? Maybe you should consider some additional treatments, such as therapy? I don't think this type of antidepressant can just stop working. They're not addictive, so you don't build up a tolerance.

I guess it affects everyone differently. I'll just have to see for myself. Thanks for the replies. :]

aw, how many milligrams are you on?

I know someone on as high as 40mg..and someone as low as 10mg. Since my case isn't as severe as some, i'm thinking the 10mg would be best for me. But alas, that's for my PCP to decide.

Dragon Lady,

I was on lexapro for depression. I was on it for a year and stupidly stopped taking them for about half a year or more. I then went back on the lexapro and I didnt feel any better after more than a month so the doctor made me go up to 20mg, that didnt seem to do the trick either. I was told that if you go on and off the drug it can lose its effectiveness but I know others who have gone on and off it and were fine.

I asked why you started a different med because I wanted to see if you had the same experience as me.

I've been on lexapro for 6 months or so now. I'm emotionally numb and my sex drive is dead but at least I'm not as depressed anymore.

Oh I see. I misinterpreted the question. I had been taking Lexapro in one country, where it was nice and cheap and government funded. Then I moved to another and it's not so government funded, so a doctor put me on one that would be covered entirely by insurance...Celexa (generic).
